Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, posted on X, warning that Senate Democrats are playing political games with national security as FISA Section 702 faces expiration at midnight Friday.

The message has drawn sharp online reactions from many conservative users, who are pressing for passage of the SAVE America Act and criticizing Senate Republican leadership amid the standoff. The exchange highlights ongoing partisan tensions in Washington over surveillance powers and election-related legislation.

Senate Democrats have decided yet again to play political games with our national security. FISA Section 702 expires at midnight on Friday.

They are risking American lives if this program goes dark. It’s that straightforward. pic.twitter.com/4sJkuIUnVf

In the video, Thune can be seen standing at a podium in an official Senate chamber along with other senators surrounding him. He mentions the popular phrase that says if we cannot properly take care of our nation’s security, then everything else is talk only. According to Thune, this is what happens to problems presented in the Senate right now.

Thune states that FISA has stopped numerous terrorist attacks and has been used in 90% of the CIA’s synthetic drug disruptions, noting that many recent drug busts originated from information derived through the 702 process. He expresses concern that Democrats in the Senate are not interested in reauthorizing the program, which will go dark at midnight on Friday without action, and adds that the timing is especially alarming as the United States prepares to host the World Cup and other major events.

The accompanying post text states that Senate Democrats have decided to play political games with national security and are risking American lives if the program expires. The video does not show Democratic senators, specific votes, or the full details of ongoing negotiations.

X Users Push Back Against the South Dakota Senate Leader’s Warning

Some users called for linking any reauthorization to other measures. One commenter wrote: “If you want your FISA Section 702 — @LeaderJohnThune — so badly, then provide for an amendment to require the gov’t to seek a warrant for US citizens & attach the SAVE America Act. You get what you want — we get what we want. Deal?”

Other responses highlighted different priorities for Senate action. A user stated, “Thune was risking America’s future by failing to pass the SAVE America Act.” Another said: “Nobody gives a *expletive* about the Fed’s ability to violate the citizens’ 4th Amendment Rights. We want legislation to legitimize our Elections.”

Additional comments directed criticism at leadership and procedures. One lengthy reply accused Thune and Senate Republicans of using pro forma sessions to block recess appointments and said, ‘You’ve Sabotaged the Agenda We Voted For,’ adding that Thune needed to be removed as Majority Leader and lose his seat.

Another stated: “You are the problem. YOU! … Fire the parliamentarian. Pass the SAVE Act. Then resign in disgrace.”

The clip is now fueling further online debate over FISA reauthorization and the other bills that Senate leaders are fighting over. Talks are still heating up as the midnight Friday deadline gets closer.
