Texas residents are questioning who the state’s highest court is protecting after justices temporarily blocked testimony that could have exposed the organization behind millions of controversial mailers.
According to The Chron, the Texas Supreme Court issued an administrative stay on Friday, stopping a scheduled deposition involving the Texas Transgender Student Union LLC. The Wyoming-registered organization reportedly distributed pamphlets presenting themselves as resources for transgender students shortly after early voting began.
The mailers directed young people toward the Transgender Education Network of Texas, or TENT, despite the legitimate advocacy organization denying any involvement. They also reportedly contained information about emancipation, gender-affirming care, and school bathroom policies.
TENT went to court to identify those responsible. A Travis County judge ordered a representative of the mysterious LLC to answer questions under oath, but the Texas Supreme Court intervened before that could happen.
Texas Reacts to the Drama
The development quickly reached Texas residents on Reddit, where the court’s last-minute involvement fueled suspicions that politically connected figures may be hiding behind the organization.
Those suspicions were intensified by an earlier deposition involving messaging provider Infobip. That testimony reportedly connected related text messages to the Republican Women Caucus Fund and an individual named John Braun. The Republican organization denied involvement with the physical mailers. A Texas user claimed, ‘I knew it had to be GOP‘.
Texas Transgender Student Union LLC maintains that forcing it to reveal its representatives would violate constitutional protections for anonymous political expression. Its attorney, Chris Hilton, accused TENT of seeking to inflict the same damage it claimed to have suffered.
“They seek to inflict some of the same harms that they claim to be suffering,” Hilton argued.
Hilton previously worked under Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and later helped represent Paxton during his impeachment trial. Paxton’s campaign has denied sending the materials.
The stay does not permanently settle the case or establish who created the campaign. It does, however, preserve that anonymity for now, leaving Texas voters with the very question the deposition was meant to answer.
