Not the welcome they expected

Construction workers confronted ICE agents at a worksite in San Diego, California, on October 8, 2026. The incident happened near Kansas Street and Polk Avenue, where agents arrived early in the morning.

According to the StopICE network, the agents attempted to detain workers without a judicial warrant. Other workers stopped their jobs and challenged the agents, demanding that they leave. Video of the encounter shows a tense confrontation around a black SUV, with workers gathering as agents attempt to control the scene.

The clip was first shared by the StopICE network, which tracks and reports immigration enforcement activity. It was filmed from an elevated position overlooking the worksite and a nearby street. Several agents wearing tactical gear and vests are seen near construction workers in high-visibility safety vests and hard hats. A black SUV with its emergency lights on is parked nearby as agents and workers gather around it.

The confrontation grows as more workers stop what they are doing and approach the agents. The StopICE account says the workers demanded that the agents leave because they had no warrant. The footage does not clearly capture the conversation, so the exact words exchanged cannot be confirmed from the video alone. However, the account describes the workers’ response as an effort to protect their coworkers from being detained.

At one point, a worker wearing an orange shirt opens the door of the black SUV. An ICE agent appears to try to stop him, but the door opens. A man with his hands cuffed behind his back then runs away from the agents. Two agents chase him as people nearby shout, “Run! Run! Run!”

The agents catch up with him and bring him back toward the vehicle. They put him inside the SUV, which later drives away. The video does not establish the man’s identity or explain the full circumstances of his detention.

The StopICE account described the encounter as workers helping their coworkers escape ICE. Its caption read, “Construction workers in San Diego stood up to ICE agents who tried to kidnap their co-workers on the job site.”

The footage shows the confrontation and the man’s attempted escape, but it does not independently establish whether agents had a warrant or what legal grounds they relied on.

The video was later widely shared on X. On October 9, Pablo Manríquez, who runs the account @PabloReports, posted another version with the caption, “SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Construction workers tell ICE agents to go *expletive* themselves today when they showed up without a warrant at Kansas Street and Polk Avenue.” The post attracted substantial engagement and helped spread the footage to a wider audience.

Internet Reacts to California Workers Confronting ICE

The video drew support from viewers who praised the workers for standing together. One person wrote, “This is the sound of America.” Another said, “Workers and unions need to be standing up.”

A third commenter focused on the man who tried to run, writing, “He would’ve made it, but it’s hard to run fast if you can’t use your arms.”

Other commenters condemned the detention. “Kidnapping at its finest,” one person wrote. Another said, “The workers defending their friends and coworkers should be hailed as heroes.”

There was no official ICE statement or local police report about this specific encounter available as of this writing.

Notably, federal law permits certain warrantless immigration arrests under specific conditions, while different rules apply to searches of private spaces.
