Courteney Cox got candid and lifted the lid on her feelings regarding motherhood sharing details that have left many fans shocked and surprised. The Friends star joined Minnie Driver on her Minnie Questions podcast (via Page Six) and reflected on her parenting style. During the interview, the 59-year-old actress wore her heart on her sleeve and discussed her relationship with her now 19-year-old daughter, Coco, who she shares with Scream alum and ex-husband, David Arquette.

When asked about whether Cox has passed any of her insecurities onto her daughter, she responded, “I look at somebody [Coco] and I’ve passed all of that stuff onto. If anything, having a girl is probably different. But I wish so bad that I realised in the moment a way to protect Coco from things. Seeing her in relationships with people that I knew this was not good. But I didn’t want to step in — even if I knew something wasn’t right — because she would get so mad at me. I should’ve trust myself. I should’ve stepped in.”
Continuing on, Cox declared: “I’m not saying I made her who she is, but you do see things in other people, whether it’s just always taking care of people and being the nicest person. That’s one of the things with age. I’ve learned to say no. I’ve learned to have boundaries. But, from earlier on when she was a kid, or not even that many years ago, I wish I was a firmer parent.”
Of course, this is a universal issue that many parents face, especially in a child’s teen years and host Minnie Driver totally understands and relates to Cox, replying: “Wow. That’s so interesting. I feel like I wrote down a list of things that I didn’t want to do that my parents did with me. I really tried. You can’t do it all the time. I dunno what Henry’s [Minnie Driver’s 15-year-old son] gonna be in therapy over to do with me — but I’m sure he’ll tell me.”
It’s safe to say that Cox’s candid revelations regarding her relationship with her daughter took listeners by surprise, as — on the surface — the duo seem to share a pretty warm and friendly bond with each other.
In fact, it’s not uncommon for the pair to show up in chummy footage together, like the above Instagram clip from September 2021. In it, Cox celebrates National Daughter’s Day, while they both kiss and cuddle one another, which is equally wholesome as it is touching, especially after listening to Cox share her regrets recently.
