One of the monsters to grace the silver screen, The Creature from the Black Lagoon is a relic of old Hollywood and an inspiration to many filmmakers throughout the years. It’s a simple story of a grotesque creature terrorizing a local swimming place. Now, since Universal is bringing back all the classic horror monsters, The Creature is up to bat next.
This summer a reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise is coming out, with hopes of invigorating the genre of the classic monsters so that the rest of them can strolling along back to cinema. Monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, and The Wolfman. The Creature From the Black Lagoon should be swimming upstream if the new Mummy movie doesn’t bomb.
The new Creature from the Black Lagoon movie was originally announced in 2015 with the writer from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 penning the script. Now, a writer named Will Beall has taken over the script. His resume includes the 2013 film Gangster Squad and more recently, Aquaman. He has job experience writing about water-dwelling characters.
The original Creature from the Black Lagoon followed a group of scientists as they went after the so-called “Gil-Man”, otherwise known as The Creature. It spawned two sequels and the upcoming remake is supposed to star Scarlett Johansson but it’s unclear if she’s taken the offer. A remake of The Creature has been on the table as far back as 2001 with the remake going off and on again. Of course, it’s back up now with the advent of the Universe monster movie reboot and connected universe incoming.
The Mummy is scheduled for release June 9th and Universal is banking on its success. The tentative release dates for the new Creature film is now April 13th, 2018 or February 16th, 2019.
