Critical Role and their sister show Talks Machina announced an upcoming Kickstarter. Giving fans what they have been asking for for years, the Kickstarter will help to fund an animated special.
The cast dropped a hint on Twitter for fans to decode. The message read “Help us animate Vox Machina”. Vox Machina is the name of the adventuring party during the first Campaign of Critical Role, which ended in November 2017. Since then, they have been playing Campaign 2 and following the story of the Mighty Nein.
ICYMI, on March 4, we’re launching a Kickstarter project to create a Vox Machina animated special! We’ll have more details to share leading up to our big launch.
Epic shoutout to the ingenious @TimothyGElsy for being the first to crack the code (within a mere 20 minutes)! pic.twitter.com/YtIytiyaq4

The Kickstarter is set to start on March 4, 2019. Details will continue to arrive leading up to the launch. Questions on fans minds include how long of a special it will be, what stories will be explored, who is animating it, and if the cast will do original voice-overs or if lines from the games will be used?
There are many plotlines that could be explored in this special. Their character origin stories that have been elaborated on in their recent graphic novel releases would be interesting. Or perhaps one of the arcs from the campaign, such as the horror-themed Briarwood arc, the devastation of the Chroma Conclave, or the rise of the lich Vecna.
This isn’t the first dive into animation that Critical Role has done. A couple of years ago, a “theme song” ad Sam Riegel composed for their sponsor D&D Beyond was animated. And more recently, a new intro was animated for their show along with a new song. These have been met with a great deal of praise from fans and have encouraged similar pursuits by the cast.
Since starting their own company in 2018, breaking away from the platform of Geek and Sundry, Critical Role has entertained viewers with extra shows, live performances, an art gallery, and plenty of merchandise. The Nerd Stash will continue to follow this story for more details on the Kickstarter as it draws closer, as well as announcements throughout the process of the animated special.
