The seafaring mermaid Cala Maria is one of the final impediments standing between Cuphead and his confrontation with the Devil. Although she appears pleasant, she is every bit as cruel as any other Inkwell Isle Three resident. Cuphead should be ready for his most chaotic airborne fight yet because she has an army of aquatic critters at her disposal. Every player can defeat this giant if they know the appropriate tips and methods. Here is how you can defeat Cala Maria in Cuphead with a few pointers.
Defeating Cala Maria in Cuphead
Phase 1
The first phase of Cala Maria’s fight is crowded with minions, each of which possesses a threat. Cala Maria’s moves allow her to summon The Puffer Gang. The creatures will injure Cuphead if he makes contact with them, so continually shoot your primary weapon to deflate these minions. Pink Puffers can be parried, so slap them when you see them rise.
The seahorse known as Squirty McSquirter, who is capable of spewing water, is another Minion at Cala Maria’s disposal. This foe will shoot water out of his mouth, pushing Cuphead’s plane up to the top of the screen. If you don’t want your mobility to be restricted, stay out of the stream. He is still one of the two water-spawning minions that Cuphead must contend with while defending himself from Cala Maria’s other attacks.
In this phase, Bombshell Barry, a turtle with Shooting Bombs attached to his back, is the second water-level minion. Once the bomb is level with Cuphead, he will blast it off, splintering it into numerous missiles. To get some space from the missiles, stay to the far left of the screen. Shrink down if the debris is too close together to prevent harm.

On rare occasions, Cala Maria would pull a huge fish from the water. You’ll be able to identify Electrifying Elma’s fish when it becomes yellow. Elma will release an Electric Shark Boomerang when Maria squeezes her, and it will chase Cuphead around the stage for a while. Avoid this shark’s attacks by shrinking. As its electrifying aura has the potential to harm Cuphead as well, back away.
When Cala Maria opens her lips, three waves of Ghost Pirates are summoned for the next assault. Each utilizes a homing assault that, after a brief time of immobility, follows Cuphead. Shrink down once the Ghost Pirates spawn and go upward or downward to elude them.
When squeezed, Cala Maria’s Fire Fred spits six Fire Fishes. Keep to the rear of the field to give these henchmen time to disperse. When it’s feasible, attempt to parry some of these fire fishes. Use a super to speed up this phase once your EX Gauge is full to defeat Cuphead’s, Cala Maria.
Phase 2
Cala Maria will change into a gorgon when Cuphead completes Phase 1, gaining a variety of new skills and a new group of allies. With the use of her Stone Gaze power, Cala Maria may temporarily petrify Cuphead. The green light will transform Cuphead into stone. If you find yourself frozen, quickly use the control stick to escape this stone cell. To avoid getting hurt during the subsequent onslaught, you must keep moving.
Eels will be called forth by Cala Maria to help her in this stage of the conflict. Each of these enemies will attack Cuphead by unleashing projectiles. Change your focus from Maria to the eels, and fire them until they explode. If too many of these monsters assault at once, Cuphead will be overpowered. After you’ve defeated two or three of them, return the fire to Cala Maria. Watch out for the pink bullets that Cuphead can deflect. Before this phase is through, aim to obtain a super off by building up your EX Gauge.
Phase 3
Cala Maria’s battle culminates in her transformation into Medusa. She’ll take off and soar backward into a coral-filled cave. You must go cautiously through the cavern to prevent getting hurt by the environment. Beware of assaults from Medusa’s orbs. The bubbles will be spewed forth by her snakes.
The Petrifying Ghost, Medusa’s strongest strike in this phase, transforms Cuphead into stone. You must quickly slam the stick to extricate yourself before hitting any barriers since Cuphead cannot evade this onslaught. If you don’t, it might be fatal. This phase may be finished most quickly by concentrating on avoiding while firing consistently. Use your powers elsewhere since doing so risks a collision.
During this phase, use a couple of EX Shots to improve your ranged damage instead of unleashing your super. You’ll eventually defeat Cuphead’s, Cala Maria. You can get through this stage with some cautious flying and persistence, earning another contract to gather souls. Even stronger monsters, such as King Dice and the Devil himself, are yet to come in the game, even if this may be its last aerial combat. Be prepared for the fight of your life because Cuphead will need to use every last bit of might to retrieve his soul from Inkwell Hell.
Cuphead is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
