Netflix released a teaser for two stand-up specials from Dave Chappelle his personal comedy vault that will air on the streaming service later this month. The teaser is a cut of similar shots of the comedian in black and white seemingly deep in thought, while a combination of past comedy bits and statements play over top.

The teaser is interesting, as it doesn’t show any parts from the special, but instead, focuses on the man it’s about and the unique situation he seems to find himself in. It’s been 12 years since Dave Chappelle left the Chappelle Show and – aside from a Dave Chappelle’s Block Party and an Infrequent stand-up and TV appearances – 12 years of reflection.

Dave Chappelle left the business – of both comedy and Hollywood – all those years ago despite a huge amount of success and a rabid fanbase. In reality, he’s stated that it was actually in spite of those factors.

A combination of having to work 20 hour days and the difficulty it caused him to stand up were huge attributing factors and occurred so often that it eventually broke him. Even before he quit, it was clear he wasn’t happy.

Chapelle’s parody of Rick James became legendary, but eventually came back to haunt him

During a stand-up performance in Sacramento, California, Chappelle walked off stage after the constant interruption from audience members shouting “I’m Rick James, bitch!” a line from his show. When the comedian returned he stated, “The show is ruining my life.”

The show would go on for close to another year even after his departure, using other hosts like Charlie Murphy to introduced pre-produced skits featuring Chapelle. Fingers crossed that the situations that pushed him away won’t come up again, but thankfully, Netflix has given Dave Chappelle a platform in which the masses can see his stand up once again, and we can only hope he is here to stay. So keep an eye out for them March 21, only on Netflix, and be sure to look for our review!
