James Van Der Beek, known for his portrayal of the starry-eyed Dawson Leery, has been diagnosed with cancer. The Dawson’s Creek star shared the devastating news in an emotional message on social media, revealing that he was robbed of the decision to speak about it on his own terms due to the fear of being outed.
Van Der Beek announced his diagnosis in a tear-jerking Instagram video showing beautiful life moments spent with his loved ones and in nature. “‘It is cancer…,‘” the caption began. “Each year, approximately 2 billion people around the world receive this diagnosis. And I’m one of them.” The Connecticut native explained that there is no “playbook” on how to announce sensitive news like health troubles. However, he planned to have a sit-down with a magazine at some point until it was disrupted.
“To raise awareness and tell my story on my own terms. But that plan had to be altered early this morning when I was informed that a tabloid was going to run with the news.”
Van Der Beek noted that he had “been dealing with this privately until now,” focusing more than ever on his health and family. He assured his fans about “feeling strong” before promising to tell them more when the time is right.
James Van Der Beek Has Colorectal Cancer, He Apologizes
The 47-year-old actor took the time to apologize to loved ones. He wrote, “Apologies to all the people in my life who I’d planned on telling myself. Nothing about this process has occurred on my preferred timeline.” However, he decided to roll with the punches and make the best of the situation. Concluding his message, Van Der Beek offered his and his family’s appreciation to fans for their love and support. Hours before his Instagram post, the Texas Rangers star spoke to People Magazine, revealing that he has colorectal cancer. He shared that he has the support of his family while taking steps to fight the disease. “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good,” he noted.
According to the Mayo Clinic, Colorectal cancer is a growth of cells that begins in a part of the large intestine called the colon. Either called colon cancer or rectal cancer, it typically affects older adults. Van Der Beek’s diagnosis comes months after the actor was announced as a cast member in a two-hour Fox special titled The Real Full Monty. In it, fans will see “a daring group of male celebrities” will strip down. The project, inspired by the 1997 film of the same name, will help raise awareness for prostate, testicular, and colorectal cancer testing and research. Van Der Beek stars alongside Taye Diggs, Tyler Posey, and more in the Anthony Anderson executive-produced film.
