Hugh Jackman is sporting some new duds for his grand return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. After spending over two decades in a black leather uniform or street clothes, Jackman will finally be able to play Wolverine in a comic-accurate suit. However, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a comic-accurate Wolverine costume. A deleted scene in 2013’s The Wolverine that featured Logan gifted a comics-inspired outfit. The character doesn’t actually end up putting the costume on, but if you’re wondering whether the Wolverine suit in Deadpool 3 is the same as 2013’s The Wolverine, here’s what you need to know.
Wolverine’s Deadpool 3 Suit Explained
We actually don’t get the full look of the costume from 2013’s The Wolverine. The superhero suit was packaged away in a special suitcase. Audiences only saw the mask, gloves, and folded-up suit tucked away in the side when the case opened. Despite this brief appearance, you will have recognized the suit as being inspired by Wolverine’s brown outfit from the 80s and 90s.
However, based on the image shared by Ryan Reynolds that features Hugh Jackman in the new Wolverine outfit, it is evident that Wolverine is wearing a different costume for Deadpool 3. Whereas the costume in 2013’s The Wolverine is brown and yellow, Deadpool 3 has Jackman wear a bright yellow and blue outfit. Deadpool 3’s Wolverine costume is based on the Astonishing X-Men comics and the hero’s original yellow and blue hero suit.
The original Wolverine outfit from The Wolverine only exists within a deleted scene, meaning it doesn’t technically exist within the movie itself. Deleted scenes are cut-out content not meant to exist within the film’s canon.
The History of Wolverine’s Costumes in Live-Action
When the original X-Men film launched in 2000, filmmakers believed that the over-the-top costumes from the comics wouldn’t translate well on film. How would audiences take characters seriously when they are wearing bright yellow spandex? Black leather suits replaced the iconic outfits of the comics and cartoons. The black leather uniforms became the unified look of the X-Men of the early 2000s.
In the twenty years after the first X-Men, superhero costumes became more accepted in the mainstream. Not only do audiences expect heroes to wear brightly colored clothes, but they also want them to in the name of authenticity with respect to the original source material. Despite Jackman playing the character for over twenty years, Wolverine only wore black leather or street clothes. This will be the first time Jackman will wear a proper superhero costume.
