Demi Lovato’s gender identity has evolved over the years, and so have her pronouns. The singer has been very fluid when it comes to her gender identity. She came out as non-binary in 2021 but reverted to using she/her pronouns in August 2022. In a recent interview, Lovato broke down her journey through gender identity. She explained the reason why she decided to add she/her to her pronouns only a year after she began using genderless pronouns.
Demi Lovato Explains Why She Switched
In a new interview with GQ Hype Spain, Lovato explained the reason why she decided to re-adopt she/her pronouns in addition to they/them pronouns. “I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting,” she said in the interview, which was translated from Spanish to English.
The 30-year-old singer-songwriter revealed that although she “got tired” of explaining her gender identity, she feels it is important that she continues to inform people about gender identities. She also expressed her wish for more gender-neutral spaces for artists and others.
The Cool for the Summer songstress bemoaned, for instance, having to use the female spaces in public toilets even though she does not completely identify as a female. Another instance would be when filling out forms where you have to specify your gender, but there are only two options. In this case, the singer has had to identify as a female due to the lack of options. She hopes this will change with time.
How Demi Lovato Started Using Non-Binary Pronouns
Lovato came out as non-binary in May 2021 during the introduction to an episode of the 4D with Demi Lovato podcast. During that episode, the former Disney star also had an intimate discussion with Alok Vaid-Menon, a gender non-conforming writer and performer.
“Over the past year-and-a-half, I’ve been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I’ve had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I’ll be officially changing my pronouns to they/them,” Lovato said.
The Confident singer added that non-binary pronouns make her feel more authentic. She indicated that they are significant to the fluidity she felt in her gender expression.
Why Demi Lovato Started Using Both Binary and Non-Binary Pronouns
In May 2022, Lovato added she/her back to her Instagram profile alongside they/them. About two months after that, she spoke about the decision in a chat with Tamara Dhia on the Spout podcast. In that conversation, she explained the concept of using non-gender-specific pronouns.
Lovato added that she had been balanced between masculine and feminine energy throughout the previous year, so she started using non-binary pronouns. She went on to explain that, for her, using non-binary pronouns was not necessarily about feeling like a man or woman but feeling like a human. She also stated that she resorted back to using the female pronouns because she started feeling more feminine.
“Recently, I’ve been feeling more feminine, and so I’ve adopted she/ her again. But I think what’s important is, like, nobody’s perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, especially when people are learning. It’s just all about respect.”
