A Demon’s Souls remake is in development from developer Bluepoint Games if a tweet from known PlayStation leaker Tidux has any merit to it. This information goes along with several rumors over the past year. Though, of course, take this leak with a grain of salt.
Demon’s Souls is the first game in the “Souls-like” genre that has become popular with the release of Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Developed by FromSoftware, Demon’s Souls launched on PlayStation 3 back in 2009. Set in the world of Boltaria, the game features challenging gameplay with combat that relies on strategic button presses, instead of button mashing seen in popular action games of today. Sony published Demon’s Souls in Japan, but due to a mixed reception initially and poor sales, Atlus picked up the publishing rights for the game in North America. FromSoftware went on to develop Dark Souls since Sony retained the IP.
Tidux’s tweet first mentions the game being a remaster, but a later tweet compares it to the Shadow of the Colossus remake. Remasters are mostly known for featuring minimal upgrades outside of higher resolution graphics and a few tweaks. Think of the God of War Collection. Remakes are built from the ground up with modern graphics, like Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy. In years past, Tidux has leaked the PS4’s UI, Fallout 4’s original announcement, and teased Sony acquiring studios before the Insomniac purchase. Of course, Tidux’s predictions haven’t always been right.

Rumors of a revisit to Demon’s Souls has been kicking around for a while now, mostly due to the game’s cult following. Recently, the rumor mill reignited from an episode of Sacred Symbols, former IGN employee Colin Moriarty’s PlayStation focused podcast. He stated, “There was one game, in particular, a remaster coming out for PlayStation, that I thought they were going to announce today, but they didn’t. I don’t know what they are waiting for with that one. Let’s just say the soul still burns with that one.” Of course, he could be referring to another game, but fans of the franchise took the last line and have run with it.
Bluepoint Games is a Texas-based studio known mostly for remastering and remaking several popular titles. In 2009, the company developed the God of War Collection for the PlayStation 3; an HD remaster of the first two God of War games. They went on to work on several HD remasters such as Ico and Shadow of the Colossus (a game they went to remake on PS4), Metal Gear Solid and Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.
The involvement of Bluepoint Games does make sense. The studio has had a long-standing relationship with Sony after working with them on several of the publisher’s most significant IPs.
Last week, in an interview with WIRED, Marco Thrush, president of Bluepoint Games hinted at what they’re working on. He said, “We’re working on a big one right now.” He did confirm Bluepoint is making a game for the upcoming PlayStation 5.
