Like many royal couples, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are scrutinized. The negativity toward the pair reached a fever pitch after they stepped away from their royal duties in 2020. Since then there’s been a feud with the couple and the Royal Family.
Harry has been very vocal about his family’s treatment of Meghan. He revealed his wife had trouble adjusting to royal life and there was no one to help her. While the prince expected an easy transition for his new bride’s royal duties, others knew it wouldn’t be easy.
According to OK! Magazine, royal author Tom Bower claimed Harry compared Meghan Markle to his late mother Princess Diana. However, his family didn’t see the comparison.
In his book, Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the War Between the Windsors, Bower wrote:
Harry assumed that Diana’s family and friends would see a similarity between Diana and his fiancee. He was disappointed. No one agreed that his vulnerable mother had anything in common with his girlfriend. More discomforting for him, they thought Meghan would not fit in with the royal family.
Princess Diana’s Brother Cautioned Prince Harry About Relationship With Meghan Markle
Prince Harry and Meghan’s whirlwind relationship took the public and his family by surprise. The couple began dating in the summer of 2016 and announced their engagement in November 2017.
Harry’s need to rush to the altar caused concern for his brother Prince William. The Prince of Wales expressed his worry to his younger brother, which further created tension for the siblings. When Harry wouldn’t listen, William enlisted the help of Princess Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer.
Bower claims that Charles Spencer’s attempts to talk to his nephew didn’t go smoothly.
At William’s request, Spencer weighed in. Three times married, Spencer cautioned his nephew to reconsider his haste towards marriage. His advice provoked a bitter reaction.
Despite his family’s concerns, Harry and Meghan married in May 2018. Although his relationships with Prince William and King Charles is still strained, he maintains a close bond with Diana’s family.
Any hard feelings between Harry and Charles Spencer seem to be in the past. During the 10th anniversary for the Invictus Games in May, Charles and his sister Lady Jane Fellowes were on hand to support their nephew. Harry was all smiles as he hugged his uncle and aunt, then chatted with his cousins Lara Spencer, Louis Spencer, and George McCorquodale.
