Some of us were hoping it wouldn’t be true, but unfortunately, the inevitable happened. Sony’s leadership announced today a round of massive layoffs for Bungie, the studio behind Destiny 2 and Marathon, with the team working on the former game taking the biggest hit. However, some internet sleuths quickly discovered that Sony’s leadership just recycled the URL of the update regarding Concord‘s closure to announce today’s layoffs, making the whole situation look even more insulting than it already is.
Sony’s Leadership Just Added a ‘2’ At the End of Destiny 2’s Layoffs Notice
User Kate Bush’s Husband on X discovered the URL debacle of today’s layoffs notice for Destiny 2‘s studio, Bungie. As explained in the images, the URL of the message Sony posted to announce the shutting down of Concord read as follows: “an-update-from-playstation-studios/”
The URL to inform Bungie’s massive layoffs is this: “an-update-from-playstation-studios-2/”
While some may see the reused message as a minor oversight, many players viewed it very differently. Across social media, users criticized Sony’s leadership, with several arguing that reusing language associated with Concord during another round of layoffs reflected poorly on the company. Others went even further, speculating that the statement may have been generated using AI or copied from the earlier announcement, though there is no evidence to support those claims.
Regardless, the community didn’t take this well. Several have already been thinking that Sony and Bungie have dropped the ball on this whole Destiny 2 and Marathon situation, and well, the reused URL is just the icing on the cake of a terrible storm for the company.
Destiny 2 Players Furious at Sony’s Leadership
Many players were unimpressed by both the layoff announcement and Sony’s apparent reuse of a Concord-related URL. Across social media, users criticized the company’s handling of the situation, with many arguing that it reflected a lack of care during an already difficult moment for Bungie employees.
“There ain’t no way it’s not AI.“
“You can see where they copied and pasted the message + line break and started typing again.“
Others, however, focused solely on blaming the leadership, saying this decision was made to appease those in charge.
“Gotta make sacrifices for the Gods of capitalism.“
“They really had to pick between an infinite money glitch or luxury cars and decided to go with the cars.“
Ultimately, many players said they were saddened by the layoffs themselves but equally frustrated by what they viewed as a careless mistake in Sony’s announcement. For some, the reused Concord message overshadowed the company’s attempt to address another difficult moment for Bungie and its employees.
