Let’s get this out of the way first: there hasn’t been an actor cast as Han Solo yet. Apologies.
BUT there is all sorts of new and exciting news regarding the upcoming Han Solo stand-alone film.
First and foremost, directors and screenwriters have been announced. Directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) have been brought on board. Those were two great movies with loads of wit. Anyone who can direct Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, and Chris Pratt so well immediately gets my vote of confidence to put together a great Han Solo movie. In fact, Pratt’s Star Lord set the internet ablaze with hopes of Pratt playing Solo (and Indiana Jones, if/when that gets rebooted).
Possibly even more exciting is the writer announced for Solo’s upcoming film: Lawrence Kasdan. He wrote (in)arguably the greatest Star Wars film to date–The Empire Strikes Back–as well as Return of the Jedi and the upcoming The Force Awakens. Bonus: Kasdan also wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark a.k.a. Han Solo in a Fedora. In other words, the guy knows how to write Han Solo.
We also have a release date for the Scruffy One’s upcoming movie: May 25th, 2018.
As for what will be in the movie, we will be seeing old staples of Solo’s life such as Lando, Chewie, Jabba, and even good ol’ “Shot Second” Greedo. And we don’t have to worry about ruining another freshly minted child actor’s life. According to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Han’s new movie will show him in his “high teens, low 20s.”
Kennedy also gave us a new hope (HA!) that this movie won’t fall into the trap of focusing on things nobody cared about like the prequels did: “There’s got to be a reason for [the stand-alone film] to be. And obviously the thing that Star Wars has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot of time [explaining] the stories that have come before. We don’t want to do that either. We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered.” So hopefully we won’t have to find out that the Solo family blood hosts some sort of snarky, smuggler bacteria.
One more character to make an appearance: Han Solo’s wife.
Yup. Marvel has published comics detailing Han’s adventures between A New Hope and Empire. In them, we find out he has a wife. Although they don’t seem to have the best relationship.
Who would you like to see play everyone’s favorite nerf herder?
