General Hospital couple Kristina Corinthos-Davis and Alison “Blaze” Rogers are embroiled in a scandal. The two have kept their relationship private because Blaze feared how her family would react. The singer’s mother, Natalia Roger-Ramirez, is conservative and disapproves of her daughter’s lifestyle. As her manager, Natalia also kept her daughter’s personal life private. But thanks to Ava Jerome, the couple’s relationship is now public.
Ava leaked a recording of Natalia making homophobic remarks and outing her daughter’s relationship. The scandal rocked Port Charles, and the young couple suffered the effects. Aside from having their privacy leaked, Kristina lost her job at an LGBTQ center, and Blaze’s recording contract was terminated.
While General Hospital thought they were writing good drama with the storyline, it’s being met with criticism with how they mishandled it.
Is Kristina and Blaze’s Storyline Realistic?
Although society is more accepting of the LGBTQ community, some people disapprove of it. General Hospital could’ve told a poignant story about Blaze’s relationship clashing with her mother’s religious beliefs. The writers could’ve had Blaze defy Natalia’s orders and go public with her romance with Kristina.
Instead, Blaze was outed in the worst way possible. Now, she and Kristina are paying the price as they deal with cancel culture.
It seems far-fetched that Kristina and Blaze would lose their careers because of the scandal. If anything, it would make them more sympathetic. The LGBTQ center wouldn’t ask Kristina to step away; instead, they’d support her and Blaze.
As for Blaze, it’s understandable how worried she would be about how this would affect her music career. There have been many real-life examples of celebrities whose careers were ruined after they were outed. Her being dropped by the record label and facing backlash is a little realistic. However, in this day and age, companies have PR plans to do damage control. So, the record label should’ve had Blaze’s back.
General Hospital is Using the Storyline to Prop Natalia
While Kristina and Blaze are the victims in this storyline, the writers are also trying to gain empathy for Natalia. Although the mother made offensive remarks, she is getting less slack than Ava. Naturally, everyone is furious at Ava for leaking the recording, and she’s now public enemy number one in Port Charles.
As for Natalia, neither Blaze nor Kristina are letting her off the hook. She apologizes and claims her upbringing is to blame for her conservative beliefs, but that doesn’t excuse her behavior. While Natalia might have lost her daughter, she still has her friend Sonny Corinthos. Although Sonny was upset at first, he forgave her.
However, many fans don’t show her any sympathy. On a Soap Central message board, viewers believed that Natalia is also a villain in this story.
Natalia is the villain, I agree. But Sonny’s newest potential acquisition for little Sonny can’t take the heat for more than a few minutes. Ava can’t just be the villain; she has to be mustache twirling villain to prop Sonny as the good guy.
Another commenter wrote:
Natalia the bigot is now the victim according to everyone in PC. I knew that was coming because as I posted earlier in this thread, Sonny needs a new woman, and they need to minimize her homophobia to make him sleeping with her ok.
Another fan replied:
Agreed! Natalia is a wretched mother and horrible person. This blaming Ava for releasing the tape and everything else is absurd. Natalia is not innocent. She is a dreadful person. Ava is just a fall guy.
The Writers Should Be Careful With How They Proceed With the Storyline
Kristina and Blaze’s storyline seems to be used to set up Ava’s inevitable downfall. Now that she’s publicly humiliated his daughter, an enraged Sonny wants revenge on Ava. While the General Hospital writers are busy concentrating on Sonny and Ava, they can’t forget the real victims in this story.
Kristina and Blaze lost everything when their privacy was invaded. They’re bound to face more public backlash and people with beliefs like Natalia’s. It will test the couple, but they’ve already proven their love and devotion to each other is strong. While the public might be against them, the couple has a supportive group of family and friends.
The writers need to proceed carefully with the storyline. Viewers are already unhappy with the message the show is sending to the LGBTQ community, and with the way things are now for the soap opera, they can’t risk upsetting their audience.
