Diddy‘s apology elicited a lot of responses across the internet. Many condemned the one-time beloved rap mogul for shocking footage released by CNN where he is seen assaulting ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a 2016 altercation. The impassioned responses caused Diddy to speak out in his defense, but his words fell short, many argue. Legal experts close to the 54-year-old explain why some details weren’t included in the apology video shared on Instagram. They also admit that it’s the right move and explain why.
Diddy Never Mentioned Cassie’s Name
Diddy issued an apology video on Instagram on Sunday, less than 48 hours after the surveillance footage was shared by CNN.
It’s so difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, but sometimes you got to do that. I went and I sought out professional help. I got into going to therapy, going to rehab. I had to ask God for his mercy and grace. I’m so sorry. But I’m committed to be a better man each and every day. I’m not asking for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry.

Commenters were quick to say this was too little, too late. Not only have the accusations against him been deeply concerning, but the video took it to another level for many. One of the biggest criticisms of the video was Diddy’s failure to address Cassie with an apology after victimizing her.
Sources Say The Apology’s Careful Wording Was Necessary
Sources close to the situation tell TMZ that Diddy is legally unable to say Cassie’s name, be it in an apology or any other circumstances.
As part of the settlements both parties reached in November, they each signed a “strict NDA.” The conditions of that NDA bars them from speaking about each other or the situation. Futhermore, sources point to Diddy’s continued legal battles as another reason he has to choose his words carefully. With three pending lawsuits — all of which deal with similar accusations against the music persona — anything he says publicly can be used against him down the line.
The sources add that Diddy’s lawyers were aware of his apology video and okayed what he did include in his statement. With all the landmines around him, it’s unlikely we’ll hear from the rapper/producer about these matters further.
Cassie’s Lawyer Spoke Out About The Apology
The apology was seen across the internet and became a subject of discussion. Among those who chimed in was Meredith Firetog, who represents Cassie and a number of other women who have stepped forward with accusations against Diddy.
When Cassie and multiple other women came forward, he denied everything and suggested that his victims were looking for a payday. That he was only compelled to ‘apologize’ once his repeated denials were proven false shows his pathetic desperation, and no one will be swayed by his disingenuous words.

Still, people are looking for greater accountability as the situation shows no sign of going away. There are so many questions that remain unanswered and people ultimately want justice. It will be interesting to see what backlash will continue against Diddy, who is no stranger to adversity and bad press. Although he’s always bounced back, so many believe his “luck” (and capability for evasion) have finally run out.
