Disney+ has dropped the first official trailer for the series Willow, a sequel series to Ron Howard’s 1988 film of the same name. The series has been actively in development since 2020. With this new trailer, fans of the cult classic film are getting their first look at Warwick Davis’s reprisal of the dwarf sorcerer Willow Ulfgood, who in the 1988 film became an unlikely hero for protecting a child who would bring down the fall of an evil sorceress. In the trailer for this series, we see that Willow is set to go on a new adventure, as the world needs him and his magic again.
Willow Series Trailer Teases New Adventure
Variety reports that the new Willow series will feature an unlikely group of heroes banding together on a quest and fighting their inner demons as they seek to save the world. That group will be played by Ruby Cruz (Mare of Easttown), Erin Kellyman (The Falcon and Winter Soldier), Ellie Bamber (The Serpent), Tony Revolori (Spider-Man: No Way Home), Amar Chadha Patel (The Third Day), Dempsey Bryk (The Birch), and of course Willow Ulfgood himself. It remains vague how much the events of the original film will tie into the new series, though the trailer does reference Willow protecting a child destined to be an empress. This could suggest that we will see the baby Elora Danan as a grown woman in the new series.
Former Star Will Be Part of New Series
While Davis is the only actor from the 1988 film to be a part of the Willow series, another star is reported to be involved in a big way. The Hollywood Reporter says that Val Kilmer’s Madmartigan will have a presence in the new series. While the details aren’t clear, Kilmer is said to have a big role in the series. This is in spite of the fact that he was not able to film onset due to Covid-19 restrictions as well as Kilmer’s own health issues. Kilmer went through a two-year battle with throat cancer, and he now speaks with an electric voice box. Kilmer has just reprised his role as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick.
The Willow series, directed by Jonathan Entwistle, will begin streaming on Disney+ on November 30, 2022.
