The Doctor probably isn’t someone you’d want to share a flat with, but it’s always good to have him back on the tv. As we settle in for Peter Capaldi’s second season as the universe wandering Time Lord, we now have a spin off show called ‘Class’ to look forward to.
Spin off shows aren’t a new thing in the ‘Whoniverse. Torchwood was the darker and edgier spin off that allowed things that the parent show couldn’t. Not without losing its tentative status as a kids show. There was also ‘The Sarah Jane Adventures’. This was a lighter and softer show about the beloved former companion of the Doctor leading a group of neighbourhood kids to investigate aliens.
‘Class’ is set at Coal Hill School. The school where the Doctor’s first two human companions taught (as well as his current companion Clara). Life on Earth in Doctor Who tends to be just like Earth in real life; except for the semi regular alien attacks. So the BBC has decided to run with this idea and decided to make eight, 45 minute episodes following teenager Patrick Ness as he tries to pass his exams while aliens keep showing up.
In the words of Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat;
‘I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels.’
‘No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we’re bringing his brilliant story-telling into Doctor Who. This is growing up in modern Britain — but with monsters!’
Class will start filming in early 2016 and debut later the same year.
