A former Doctor Who star has been cast in Rob Zombie’s film adaptation of The Munsters, based on the 1960’s series of the same name. Sylvester McCoy, known for playing the seventh Doctor on Doctor Who from 1987 to 1989, will portray Igor in Zombie’s film.
In addition to playing the Doctor, McCoy is known for his portrayal of Radagast the Brown in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. He will now join The Munsters film alongside Jeff Daniel Phillips, Sheri Moon Zombie, and Daniel Roebuck who will play Herman, Lily, and Grandpa Munster respectively.
The Munsters was a sitcom from the 1960s often compared to The Addams Family that detailed the home life of a family of monsters. The family consisted of Frankenstein’s monster Herman, vampire Lily, Grandpa Munster (a.k.a. Count Dracula), werewolf Eddie, and Herman and Lily’s niece Marilyn, who was attractive by human standards but considered the family’s ugly duckling. McCoy’s Igor will be a loyal servant to the Munster family. Considering Igor’s famous role as assistant to Dr. Frankenstein, it wouldn’t be surprising to see some connection with Herman Munster. However, no details suggesting such a story have been revealed. Likewise, no casting regarding Eddie or Marilyn Munster has been announced.
Igor was not a character in the original The Munsters. However, he did appear in the 1981 TV film The Munsters’ Revenge as a caretaker at Castle Dracula. McCoy is known for his portrayal of unusual characters from his whimsical and quirky portrayal of the Doctor to his portrayal of the eccentric and isolated animal-loving wizard Radagast. Portraying a character as odd as Igor may be right up his ally.
The Munsters will be a Peacock exclusive upon home release.
