No Rest for the Wicked, a top-down Souls-like from the developer of the Ori series, is not your run-off-the-mill ARPG. While it features action RPG staples like stat building and rarity-based loot, there is one huge difference when building your character. The game provides quite a flexible way and approach for progression, giving freedom of playstyles to its players. You will not be stuck in traditional RPG classes with No Rest for the Wicked‘s character customization.
Are There Classes in No Rest for the Wicked?
No Rest for the Wicked does not offer a class system; instead, your ability is dictated by gear and stats. Yep, this means you don’t need to mull over whether to play as a Warrior, Mage, or Priest and get locked into a specific playstyle. If you’re a fan of FromSoftware’s Souls series, you should be familiar with this mechanic. Developer Moon Studios described it as a “soft class system” where the goal is to let players create “any build imaginable.”
Defeating enemies and completing quests will still give you XP, though, like most RPGs. By leveling up, you will earn stat points that you can put into eight different statuses. Focusing on a select stat lets you create your own class in No Rest for the Wicked:
- Health: Increases your HP.
- Stamina: Increases the Stamina meter. Dictates the number of attacks and dodges or blocks you can do.
- Strength: Increases Strength-based weapon damage.
- Dexterity: Increases Dexterity-based weapon damage.
- Intelligence: Increases Intelligence-based weapon damage.
- Faith: Increases Faith-based weapon damage.
- Focus: Increases the Focus meter.
- Equip Load: Determines how much gear you can equip and the dodge type.
Is There a Character Customization Feature?
While there is no class system, there is character customization in No Rest for the Wicked. When you start the game, you’ll be greeted by the character creation menu.
You start by selecting body types, and then face presets for your character. Afterward, you will have to name them, and you can edit your avatar’s details further. Six facial features are available to be tweaked: face, hair, eyes, nose, mouth, and jawbone. Complete the character creation section and you’re ready to begin building a versatile custom class in No Rest for the Wicked!
No Rest for the Wicked is available on PC as a Steam Early Access title and will be released on PlayStation and Xbox.
