The MCU’s latest TV entry, Secret Invasion, has finished after six episodes. The series saw Nick Fury come down from his space base to deal with a Skrull problem on Earth, pretty much acting as a direct sequel to one of the plotlines from Captain Marvel. As is the case with most MCU properties lately, everything was not tied up in a neat little bow in the final episode. Instead, it seems that there are a few plotlines that won’t be tied up until later – maybe in the next MCU movie. As such, Secret Invasion might have just set up The Marvels.
It’s no secret that Samuel L. Jackson will be returning to the MCU later this year, as before the final episode of the series aired, Marvel released a trailer for The Marvels, and Nick Fury is clearly one of the supporting characters. The film will see Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) go up against a Kree named Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). But, with no post-credits scene, we have to work a little harder to see exactly how Secret Invasion might have set up The Marvels.
How Will Secret Invasion Tie Into The Marvels?
At first glance, none of this might scream out as to how Secret Invasion will set up The Marvels. However, because of an interview with Samuel L. Jackson by Empire, we know a little more about it. Jackson said, “This series has to happen so that The Marvels can happen.” Before we continue, we will be getting into Secret Invasion plot points so there will be spoilers from here on out. At the end of Secret Invasion, Nick Fury goes back to space, this time with his wife Varra. Fury mentions that he needs his wife, who is a Skrull, to help him have peace talks with the Kree.
Seeing as the Kree will be a big part of The Marvels, it seems like that might be what Jackson was talking about. Plus, there’s a chance that Fury is in the middle of the peace talks when Dar-Benn, The Marvels‘ antagonist, attacks. We could get a reference to Varra in the movie or a scene where Fury explains to Captain Marvel what happened on Earth, especially with Talos’s death. It does seem unlikely that we’ll get any extended reference to Secret Invasion, especially considering the final episode essentially broke the power rankings in the MCU with G’iah (Emilia Clarke) absorbing the Harvest.
Beyond what we’ve shared above, it will be clear exactly how Secret Invasion sets up The Marvels when the movie flies into theaters on November 10, 2023. As for Secret Invasion, you can watch all six episodes on Disney+ now.
