How far would you be willing to go to be the ideal you? That’s what’s explored in the deliciously disgusting body horror film The Substance. Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat (Revenge), it follows a veteran actress named Elisabeth Sparkle who tries an experimental drug to try and reclaim her youth. The Substance stars Demi Moore (Ghost), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow). As it’s a horror movie, you might be wondering if there’s anything at the end of the film that teases a sequel. So, let’s see if The Substance has a post-credits scene.
Is There a Post-Credits in The Substance?
If you need to rush off to the bathroom to throw up after the film’s gruesome ending, feel free to do so when the credits start to roll, because The Substance does not have a post-credits scene. However, you could always stay and watch the credits to see the names of all the people who worked on the movie. Plus, if you wait you’ll get to enjoy the tremendous score one last time and see a funny line in the special thanks section. But, keep in mind that there are no extra scenes, stingers, or blooper reels during or after the credits.
The Substance is one of those films that doesn’t need anything special after the credits. Sitting in the theater, listening to the score, and digesting what you’ve just seen is probably the best thing you could ask for. Any blooper reels or post-credits scenes undoubtedly would have taken away from the ending. The Substance is without a doubt a standalone film, with as close to a closed-loop narrative as you can get. It has a small cast of characters and most of their fates are obvious by the time the credits roll.
So, there’s nothing in The Substance that sets up a sequel, and there are no post-credits scenes. That’s fine because movies should be unique. Of course, that isn’t to say that it isn’t reminiscent of anything that came before it. If you want to watch something else like The Substance, you should see Society or What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?. The former has similar elements of body horror, while the latter depicts a story about a similarly older actress.
You can watch The Substance in theaters from September 20, 2024.
