Donald Trump takes the reigns to stir the narrative about his connection with the late Queen Elizabeth amid his second bid for presidency. The former President of the United States got to meet the then-British monarch, spending enough time together to create opinions of each other. Their brief meetings fueled Trump’s longtime admiration for the British monarch, who he has spoken fondly of on occasions.
One royal author is now stepping forward to say Donald Trump’s meeting with Queen Elizabeth II wasn’t as rosy as the former POTUS would like the world to believe. In his new book, Voyage Around the Queen, author Craig Brown looked back at Trump’s state visit to the late Queen in 2019, which was not unusual given his status as the US president at the time. In the book, profiled by The Daily Mail, Brown explained,
“Over the course of her reign, Her Majesty entertained many controversial foreign leaders, including Bashar al-Assad, Robert Mugabe, Idi Amin, Donald Trump, Emperor Hirohito, and Vladimir Putin.”
What Queen Elizabeth Really Thought of Donald Trump
While their meeting happened on official grounds, Donald Trump made quite an impression on Queen Elizabeth. According to Brown’s book, Her Majesty often made discreet notes about her distinguished guests, and even voiced her disapproval, especially when she did not find “their company convivial.” Trump’s case was one such example, as the late British monarch noticed his “very rude” demeanor on the spot. Brown wrote,
“A few weeks after President Trump’s visit, for instance, she confided in one lunch guest that she found him ‘very rude.’ She particularly disliked the way he couldn’t stop looking over her shoulder, as though in search of others more interesting.”
Trump, who appears to believe he held a special spot in the Queen’s heart after their encounters, found these inciteful remarks to be a bitter pill to swallow. In an interview with Daily Mail, Donald Trump fired back at Craig Brown, calling him a “sleaze bag’ and his claims “totally false.” He voiced,
“I have no idea who the writer is, but it was really just the opposite. I had a great relationship with the queen. She liked me and I liked her. We spent hours together at a state dinner. She was a fantastic woman. I think it’s a shame that a sleaze bag can write an article that’s totally false.”
Going further, Donald Trump explained he had only ever heard the opposite of Brown’s claims, insisting the then-British monarch favored his presidency. According to the presidential aspirant, he heard Queen Elizabeth deemed him her “favorite president,” and never hesitated to voice that fact to “a lot of people.”
Donald Trump makes no secret of his admiration for the British royal family. While he admittedly admired the royals right from his childhood, he only snagged his first close-up meeting with Queen Elizabeth in 2018, during an informal tea session following his election as President. The meeting remained underpublicized due to ongoing protests across the US. Thankfully, the former POTUS reenacted the experience with his 2019 state visit, made more official. Trump believes their interaction at these meetings and beyond indicated the Queen’s approval of him and, ultimately, confirms Craig Brown’s book as an epistle of falsehood.
