Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D just came out, and the producer of the remake says he wants to see Final Fantasy 6 get a similar remake in the future. The game uses the Square Enix trademark HD-2D style that we’ve already seen in other games from the publisher like Octopath Traveler 1 and 2, Triangle Strategy, and the Live a Live remake. It seems this style of remake might stick around, and maybe even Final Fantasy 6 fans can hope for an HD-2D remake of the game.
In a recent interview with Masaaki Hayasaka, the producer of Dragon Quest 3, by Inverse, he said that the Square Enix game he’d like to see remade in the HD-2D fashion was Final Fantasy 6. He went on to add that this doesn’t mean he is confirming that the game is being worked on, but he would like to see more games in this style.
The reason for this is that Final Fantasy 6 is one of the few games that played a pivotal role in developing the now-familiar HD-2D style in the first place. Although there aren’t any “concrete plans” at the time of writing, the pixel art of FF6 was some of the best, not only at the time of release but even now.
This makes it very compatible with a remake of this style that preserves the original look while making it a bit more modern and using some of the extra resources available to modern consoles.
If you are enjoying your time with Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, you will be happy to know that Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D remakes are being worked on and should come out next year. The reason the third game came out first is because chronologically, the third is the very beginning of the series, and will be followed by 1 and 2.
