Drake has found himself in hot water. On Friday, May 16, the “God’s Plan” rapper shared a petition calling for Tory Lanez‘s prison release alongside the message, “@torylanez come home soon.” Since he’s serving time for shooting Megan Thee Stallion, fans are criticizing Drake for supporting Lanez amid the controversy.
Drake Sides With Tory Lanez In Megan Thee Stallion Shooting
In his latest Instagram Story, Drake posted a link to a Change.org petition asking California Governor Gavin Newsom to pardon Lanez (whose real name is Daystar Peterson) to “correct a deep injustice.” The page claims the rapper shouldn’t have been jailed due to the lack of “conclusive physical evidence” tying him to the case. Instead, it blames the shooting on Megan Thee Stallion’s former best friend, Kelsey Harris. It references the recent report from Harris’s bodyguard claiming she was the one who pulled the trigger. “Harris allegedly admitted to firing the gun into the air before Lanez intervened,” the petition read, adding that an eyewitness saw “two women fighting” at the scene of the crime.
It goes on to further criticize Tory Lanez’s prison sentence following the news that he was stabbed by a fellow inmate, “raising urgent concerns about his safety and well-being.”

As of the time of writing, 216,251 people have signed the petition. Drake is being criticized not only for adding his name but also for sharing the petition with his 142 million Instagram followers. Fans think it’s wrong for him to side with Lanez when his guilty verdict was already decided years ago. They also said it’s harmful for him to influence his followers to question the case and Megan Thee Stallion. “He’s such a f*cking weirdo,” one person wrote. “It’s like he hates women,” another said. “Loyalty over logic, huh? Interesting strategy, Drake,” read another comment. They suggested the rapper was letting his friendship with Lanez sway his opinion of the shooting.
So, What Really Happened?
Despite the recent report suggesting Kelsey Harris is to blame, Megan Thee Stallion has denied it. According to XXL Magazine, her attorney, Alex Spiro, insists Tory Lanez shot her and not Harris. The New York lawyer, who has had multiple celebrity clients like Jay-Z and Alec Baldwin, says Stallion’s case “was properly adjudicated through the court system.” He told the publication, “This is not a political matter — this is a case of a violent assault that was resolved in the court of law.”
Megan Thee Stallion’s shooting happened in July 2020 when she and Lanez were dating. The night of the incident, the former couple had attended a party thrown by Kylie Jenner. After leaving the event, Stallion and Lanez began arguing inside their vehicle. Due to things quickly escalating, the “Savage” rapper wanted to exit their car. That’s when Lanez allegedly responded by shooting Stallion in the foot.
Initially, Stallion told police she injured her foot from stepping on broken glass. However, she later claimed Lanez had shot her and didn’t originally report the incident out of fear.
In August 2023, Lanez was sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Stallion. He was found guilty of three charges: assault with a firearm, illegal possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
