With Dune: Part Two officially out in theaters, the world of Dune is expanding into video games, with the first trailer for Dune: Awakening dropping today. The teaser gives fans of the franchise their first look at the upcoming MMO game from Funcom, the company behind Dune: Spice Wars and Conan Exiles, among other games. The new trailer shows the player navigating the arid wasteland of Arrakis in a (somewhat ironically named) sandbox survival game, where your goal is to collect resources and carve out a life for yourself in the dunes.
Dune: Awakening Releases “Survive Arrakis” Trailer
Rumors have surrounded Dune: Awakening for a while – it’s available to wishlist on Steam, and you can sign up for the beta on its website – but it hasn’t dropped a trailer until now. In the game’s first trailer, simply titled “Survive Arrakis,” the new survival MMO gives players a never-before-seen look at some of its gameplay mechanics, including cliff climbing, combat, desert navigation, resource gathering, and base building, similar to many other open-world survival games, even ones we’ve seen as recently as last month.
However, unlike most survival games, the new Dune: Awakening trailer also includes a massive sandworm, hordes of ornithopters, and explosive, high-tech battles in stretches of barren desert: scenes that should be familiar to any fans of the Dune franchise. Funcom hasn’t said how Dune: Awakening fits into the larger series, but it has been confirmed that the game will feature appearances from Dune characters. The Steam summary of the game reads as follows:
Your journey begins on Arrakis, with its vast deserts and colossal sandworms. Meet characters from the movies and books as you follow your story across Dune. Discover new allies and enemies and exploit your relationships to uncover the mystery that lies just beneath the surface of the sands.
Craft your identity and build your prowess, from deep character creation to skills and abilities taught by specialists like Mentats and Bene Gesserit. Declare your loyalties by what you wear and become known by what you do, whether you are a specialized master or multi-talented adept.”
