NBA icon Dwyane Wade has come forward with a shocking cancer diagnosis that made him undergo surgery. The retired athlete made the revelation during Thursday’s episode of his podcast, calling the health battle the “weakest point” of his life.
On the Why With Dwyane Wade podcast, Wade shared he went under the knife in December 2023 to remove 40% of his kidney. He recalled visiting the hospital after years of putting off getting his physical done. The Miami Heat alum complained about stomach cramps and problems urinating.
“Why is my piss coming out slow, why is my stream ain’t powerful? Why is it a little weak?” he recalled to his co-host. After a full body scan, doctors told Wade he had a cyst on one of his kidneys and had to undergo surgery. They later determined that the tumor was cancerous. Although the former NBA star didn’t give an update on his current health status, he detailed the emotional impact of the diagnosis.
“My own journey to have that surgery; I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak. That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life.”
Despite calling the surgery the right choice, the 43-year-old admitted he “was struggling” by himself.
Dwyane Wade Found ‘Strength’ In Family Amid Cancer Battle
Luckily, he didn’t have to go through the difficult time alone, as his family stood by him. He credits them—wife Gabrielle Union and five kids—for giving him strength.
“What I saw in the midst of me going through my illness: I saw my family that may not always talk, may not always agree. I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me, and in that process, in my weakness, I found strength in my family.”
Wade also learned a lesson on vulnerability. “As a man, you never want your family to see you weak,” he explained. “Don’t want to be perceived weak, don’t want to be seen in your weakest moments, but I had to.”
The retired basketball player’s revelation sparked reactions online. Many expressed shock that Wade and his family managed to keep his diagnosis private.
“Damn. I’m shocked it was kept secret for so long,” expressed one fan.
“Glad DWade found this early and had it removed,” a second comment read.
“Applause for sharing strength in vulnerability. Wishing you continued health, Dwyane,” this user added.
It is great news that Dwyane Wade caught the tumor in time. Hopefully, his story inspires others.
