It seems Ed Sheeran will be entering the land of fire and ice in the not too distant future. Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss confirmed the cameo during a panel at SXSW. Stating the reason for Sheeran’s casting came from long-time cast member Maisie Williams’ (Arya Stark) obsession with the singer/ songwriter. Other musicians have already appeared on the show. Including Coldplay’s Will Champion, Animal Circus’s Joel Fry, and members of metal band Mastodon. However, Benioff stated, that after years and years of trying to surprise Williams with Sheeran’s appearance, he is finally on board with the idea.
Where Sheeran may fit into the show at this point is unknown as our knowledge of the upcoming seasons is limited to several teasers. The tagline for the upcoming season 7, is, “the great war is here,” with a poster of fire coursing through ice. It is implied that this ‘great war’ is one waged between the White Walkers and mankind. And with Daenerys Targaryen heading to Westeros at the end of season 6, it seems highly likely that we will witness the clashing of fire and ice.
Sheeran will be joining the show rather late in its life cycle. As season 7 only consists of 7 episodes and the final season (season 8) will have the lowest number of episodes per season to date, with a minimalistic 6 episodes. Benioff and Weiss did add that despite the season’s short length, fans will be privy to some of the most epic and large scale confrontations the series has ever seen. Sir Davos Seaworth actor Liam Cunningham revealing to IGN that many of the expansive cast will be coming together relatively soon.
Game of Thrones will return for season 7 on July 16th of this year. For everything on Game of Thrones and all else mythical, stay tuned to Thenerdstash.com.
