Deathroot, a sign that Demigods have died, is highly sought after by Gurranq, the Beast Clergyman of the Bestial Sanctum in Elden Ring. They’re a curious thing and incredibly rare—only nine are found in all of the Lands Between. It’s totally worth finding since it gives you access to numerous beast-related abilities, like Beast Claw. If that’s not your style, then you should do it for the rare Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone, given to you by Gurranq for finding them.
Deathroot Location #1: Limgrave, Summonwater Village
[Updated June 17, 2024 – Rewrote directions and added images for each location]

First up is the Deathroot in Summonwater Village, which is located on the northeastern border of Limgrave, just before you enter Caelid. You’ll also find D, Hunter of the Dead, outside the village; speaking with him will trigger a quest. It isn’t required, but since D unlocks a quick route to Gurranq, you might as well.
Now, when you enter Summonwater Village, a Tibia Mariner boss will appear. Defeat him, and you’ll earn your first Deathroot. If you spoke with D beforehand, he’d now be at the stump of a tree near where the Tibia Mariner spawns. Speak with him, and he’ll show you where to find a waygate that leads to Gurranq.
Deathroot Location #2: Limgrave, Deathtouched Catacombs

Onto the second Deathroot in Elden Ring: it actually isn’t far from where the first one was. If you doubleback to Saintsbridge, west of Summonwater Village, and follow the path towards Warmaster’s Shack, you’ll find a narrow path. It’s just as you enter Warmaster’s Shack, directly to your right. At the top of the ramp, you’ll see doors built into the rock to your left.
Upon reaching the end of the Deathtouched Catacombs, you’ll have to defeat the Black Knife Assassin to earn your second Deathroot.
Deathroot Location #3: Liurnia, South of Carian Study Hall

The next two Deathroots are found in Liurnia of the Lakes, the first of which is near the Carian Study Hall. If you follow the eastern coast of Liurnia, you’ll come to a tower—that’s the Carian Study Hall. More importantly, just south of that tower, in the little swamp area, is another Tibia Mariner. You know what to do: kill the Tibia Mariner and another Deathroot is yours.
Deathroot Location #4: Liurnia, Black Knife Catacombs

The second Deathroot in Liurnia of the Lakes is within the Black Knife Catacombs. That’s further north from the Carian Study Hall, to the east of the Minor Erdtree. If you have the Ruined Labyrinth site of grace, head northeast, past the Minor Erdtree on your left, and you’ll find the entrance to the Black Knife Catacombs.
At the end of the Black Knife Catacombs, you’ll have to find the dungeon boss, a Cemetary Shade. It doesn’t have a lot of health, so it should be a cakewalk. You’ll get another Deathroot for your efforts!
Deathroot Location #5: Altus Plateau, Wyndham Ruins

Up for boxing another Tibia Mariner? This one is over in the Wyndham Ruins, which is directly north of the Grand Lift of Dectus, past the Lux Ruins. If you hae the Erdtree-Gazing Hill site of grace, travel north and you’ll find the ruins.
Unlike the other Tibia Mariners, this boss summons a gigantic skeleton. Fortunately, the boss is just as weak, so focus on the Tibia Mariner, and the Deathroot is yours.
Deathroot Location #6: Altus Plateau, Gelmir Hero’s Grave

The final Deathroot in Altus Plateau is in the Gelmir Hero’s Grave dungeon. The dungeon boss is the Red Wolf of the Champion, who is essentially the Red Wolf of Radagon, moveset and all. Anyway, defeat the Red Wolf, then loot the chest for the Deathroot.
Using the Bridge of Iniquity site of grace can get you pretty close to the dungeon. If you follow the path north and over to the volcano, there’s a ledge you can climb to take you through the stone valley and directly toward the Gelmir Hero’s Grave.
Deathroot Location #7: Mountaintops of the Giants, Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs

The Mountaintops of the Giants is home to three Deathroots in Elden Ring, all of which are behind three bosses, such as another Tibia Mariner and Black Knife Assassin. First up is the Deathroot in the Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs (What a name!).
Just past the Zamor Ruins, but before the treacherous path into more of the area, there’s a ramp. Before you cross the thin path through the mountains, turn back and check underneath the ramp to find the dungeon. At the end is the Ulcerated Tree Spirit; kill the boss, loot the chest, and go about your business.
Deathroot Location #8: Mountaintops of the Giants, Overlooking Castle Sol

After you leave the Giants’ Mountaintop Catacombs and follow the path further into the Mountaintops of the Giants, you’ll be funneled towards Castle Sol. You don’t want to enter the castle but rather climb the paths up and away from the castle. There’s a massive cliff from which you can view all of Castle Sol.
More importantly, there is another Tibia Mariner, but the last you’ll find on your journey for Deathroot in Elden Ring.
Deathroot Location #9: Mountaintops of the Giants, Hidden Path to the Haligtree

Last but not least is the Deathroot in the Hidden Path to the Haligtree. It has two paths, one of which takes you into the catacombs. That’s the one you want because there’s a Stray Mimic Tear boss at the end of the “dungeon.”
Here’s a pro top: Take your gear off before you enter the fight; the mimic tear copies whatever gear you’re wearing when you step in. After the fight, loot the chest for the final Deathroot in Elden Ring.
