Somber Smithing Stones are your fun tokens when it comes to wielding unique and boss weapons in Elden Ring. They simply let you upgrade the weapons and unlock their true potential. But as with all things fun, you’re going to need a lot of fun tokens to keep the fun running. We’re here to ensure that your Somber Smithing Stones farming is also sort of fun and fast by pointing out the most efficient ways to obtain them so you have more time for other Elden Ring challenges before Shadow of the Erdtree arrives.
Somber Smithing Stone 1
You won’t find a big concentration of Somber Smithing Stone 1 in the early, low-level areas in Elden Ring. After all, you don’t really get many boss weapons this early in the game. But if you want to stockpile them nonetheless, head to Morne Tunnel in the Weeping Peninsula.
You’ll find three of them for free in Morne Tunnel. You can also purchase them from Smithing Master Iji (West of Liurnia of the Lakes) for 2,000 Runes. If Iji is dead, give his Bell Bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks so they’ll sell the Smithing Stones instead.
Free Somber Smithing Stone 1 is sadly scattered everywhere else all over Limgrave and Liurnia of the Lakes. Each of these locations contains one Somber Smithing Stone 1 and is easy to farm as you’ll practically just pick them up:
- The area behind Castle Morne in Weeping Peninsula.
- Limgrave Tunnels (near a hidden ledge area in the boss room).
- Past the bridge to the east of Agheel Lake in Limgrave, on a corpse sitting on a chair.
- Teardrop Scarab in the Church of the Dragon Communion in Limgrave
- From a Teardrop Scarab Southwest of Artist’s Shack Southwest of Liurnia of the Lakes.
- Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel in Liurnia of the Lakes.
The other locations are guarded by tough enemies like Giant Crabs and Lion Guardians.
Somber Smithing Stone 2
Somber Smithing Stone 2 is about as rare as Somber Smithing Stone 1 but you can get three for free at Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel.
Otherwise, the fastest farming location would still be Smithing Master Iji (West of Liurnia of the Lakes) or the Twin Maiden Husks for 3,000 Runes. You can also keep an eye out for Teardrop Scarabs as they drop Somber Smithing Stones.
If you’re feeling a little brave, head out to Caria Manor in Liurnia of the Lakes and kill the Fingercreepers. Each one of them drops a Somber Smithing Stone 2 when killed for the first time. The Lesser Fingercreepers have around a 13 percent drop chance for Somber Smithing Stone 2.
Somber Smithing Stone 3
Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel is your go-to again for this one as you can get three here for free again. Otherwise, be on the lookout for any Teardrop Scarab all over the Lands Between.
If you have Runes to spare, then Smithing Master Iji or Twin Maiden Husks sells them for 4,000 Runes. Sadly, the drop rate from enemies is lower for Somber Smithing Stone 3. And every other location is too scattered for efficient farming.
Still, if you ever find yourself in Liurnia of the Lakes, in Raya Lucaria Academy, or the Caria Manor, you can look for Somber Smithing Stone 3 from these usual loot spots:
- Teardrop Scarabs
- Corpses near windows, chairs, altars, or narrow paths.
This is the point where the Somber Smithing Stones become increasingly scarce so make sure to prioritize certain weapons.
Somber Smithing Stone 4
Go to Sellia Crystal Tunnel in Caelid and clear it for three free Somber Smithing Stone 4. You can also find them from corpses and Teardrop Scarabs all over Raya Lucaria Academy and Liurnia of the Lakes. But Caelid has the heavier concentration of Somber Smithing Stone 4.
Thankfully, Smithing Master Iji or the Twin Maiden Husks still sell them for 6,000 Runes each. If you need more, you’re going to need to perform some dungeon crawling in Caelid in the following places:
- South of Forsaken Ruins in Caelid.
- Swamp of Aeonia, near a swarm of Giant Dragonflies.
- Sellia Hideaway in Caelid.
- Gael Tunnel in Caelid/Limgrave.
- Minor Erdtree Northwest of Caelid.
For one-time guaranteed drops, you’ll want to kill the two Fingercreepers at Mt. Gelmir just outside the Volcano Manor. But who the hell wants to fight those things again anyway?
Somber Smithing Stone 5
No more easy handouts for this one. Free Somber Smithing Stone 5 requires you to traverse some of the most dangerous mid-game areas in Elden Ring.
However, you can find them from Teardrop Scarabs and corpses scattered all over these areas:
- South of the Deep Siofra Well Site of Grace
- Siofra River (large stone ruin in the highest area)
- Redmane Castle (corpse surrounded by chairs in the northern area of the castle)
- Altus Plateau
- Shaded Castle (corpse by the dead tree on the West of the outer courtyard)
- Mt. Gelmir
- Volcano Manor
- Nokron, Eternal City
If you find a Somberstone Minder’s Bell Bearing (3) (which you can obtain in the First Church of Marika in Mountaintops of the Giants), then you can give it to the Twin Maiden Husks so they’ll sell you Somber Smithing Stone 5.
Somber Smithing Stone 6
You can find two Somber Smithing Stone 6 inside the Old Altus Tunnel. Otherwise, you’ll have to rely on the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (3) again and the Twin Maiden Husks for a reliable supply of Somber Smithing Stone 6.
If you don’t mind exploring a bit, which is considerably slow, then look for Teardrop Scarabs, corpses, and loot in the following areas:
- Deeproot Depths
- Aisnel River
- Leyndell, Royal Capital
- Shunning Grounds
- Volcano Manor
Those have the highest concentration of Somber Smithing Stone 6, but each loot spot only gives one and they’re still notably dispersed all over those areas.
Somber Smithing Stone 7
Somber Smithing Stone 7 farming is thankfully a little more focused. The most consistent method to get 13 Somber Smithing Stone 7 is by killing 13 different Fingercreepers at the Mountaintops of the Giants. Each of them drops one Somber Stone 7 when killed for the first time. You’ll find plenty of them just outside the Fire Giant boss arena.
Additionally, the two locations and methods below will each give two Somber Smithing Stone 7:
- Subterranean Shunning-Grounds (in the area with the two Giant Crayfish). Look for a Teardrop Scarab and a corpse.
- Kill the two Lion Guardians in Castle Sol, Mountaintops of the Giants. They each drop one Somber Smithing Stone 7.
While you’re at it, you can also make a quick trip to the Crumbling Farum Azula to grab the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (4) near the Tempest-Facing Balcony Site of Grace. Then give them to the Twin Maiden Husks for an unlimited supply of Somber Smithing Stone 7.
Otherwise, you know the drill. Look for Teardrop Scarabs, corpses, and shiny loot. Somber Smithing Stone 7 is scattered all throughout these areas:
- Mountaintops of the Giants
- Deeproot Depths
- Nokstella, Eternal City
- Lake of Rot
Somber Smithing Stone 8
Two easy Somber Smithing Stone 8 can be found in the Yelough Anix Tunnel in the Consecrated Snowfield. You can also find another two in Castle Sol, near a ledge outside the castle. Everywhere else is too scattered.
If you managed to get the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (4) from the instructions above for Somber Smithing Stone 7, then you can just purchase Somber Smithing Stone 8 from the Twin Maiden Husks. In any case, these locations have the most Somber Smithing Stone 8 if you hunt for Teardrop Scarabs, corpses, and loot:
- Lake of Rot
- Consecrated Snowfield
- Crumbling Farum Azula
Somber Smithing Stone 9
Somber Smithing Stone 9 is more scarce compared to other Somber Smithing Stones. But since you’re already in the Crumbling Farum Azula at this point, you might as well pick up the Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (5) (near the altar down the lift from The Great Bridge Site of Grace) and give them to the Twin Maiden Husks for an unlimited supply.
Otherwise, you can find them scattered all through the following locations, these have the highest concentration of technically free Somber Smithing Stone 9:
- Crumbling Farum Azula (there’s a total of four)
- Consecrated Snowfield (a total of three)
- Haligtree/Elphael (a total of three)
Just look for Teardrop Scarabs, corpses, and more radiant loot pillars. Note that at this point, some of the Teardrop Scarabs are invisible.
Somber Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone
This is the rarest among the Somber Smithing Stones and there are only eight of them in the game. That means you can only get eight unique weapons to +10 in a single playthrough. You can find three of them in Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree in the following locations:
- Chest in an area well past the Prayer Room Site of Grace, near the pavilion with the Red Scarab.
- Corpse at the end of the large walkway with the patrolling Putrid Avatar, just after the Prayer Room Site of Grace.
- A reward after completing the Millicent questline (you need to insert the gold needle in Malenia’s scarlet flower after defeating her).
You can find the other five in these locations and methods:
- In the pavilion behind the Farum Azula Dragon (the one that attacks with lightning) just past the Dragon Temple Rooftop Grace.
- Complete Latenna’s quest and deliver her to the Apostate Derelict church in the Consecrated Snowfield.
- Kill Anastasia, Tarnished-Eater after her third invasion on the frozen river, Southwest of Ordina, Liturgical Town in the Consecrated Snowfield.
- Near the chest in front of a big statue after the Dynasty Mausoleum Midpoint Grace.
- The building on top of the dead dragon in Leyndell, Ashen Capital (after the Erdtree is burned).
If you need more, you’re going to have to start another playthrough. Good thing there’s plenty of time for that. We’re still several months away from Shadow of the Erdtree.
