Mohgwyn Palace is among the bloodiest places in Elden Ring (literally). Despite being a late-game area, you can access it early on. Even then, it’s still one of the trickiest places to reach in Elden Ring. You’ll often get lost trying to find Mohgwyn Palace on your own. There are two ways to get to Mohgwyn Palace in Elden Ring, and both of them can get confusing. Hence, I’m here to help guide maidenless souls down the right (and bloody) path to Mohgwyn Palace.

How to Get to Mohgwyn Palace Early
This is the first method and it will let you rush to Mohgwyn Palace and its surrounding area starting from Liurnia of the Lakes.
However, there are certain strict requirements for this method depending on your approach. There’s an offline NPC approach and an online PvP approach. The latter requires an online connection, of course.
In any case, follow this step-by-step process to get to Mohgwyn Palace much earlier.
- Upon entering Limgrave for the first time, make sure you talk to White Mask Varre near The First Step Site of Grace. Exhaust his dialog.
- Proceed to Liurnia of the Lakes and head to the southwestern part of the lake until you find the Rose Church.
- Varre will be waiting outside Rose Church. Talk to Varre and he will give you the Festering Bloody Finger.
- Afterward, you can pick your approach here depending on your online availability or preference. Select either of these options to progress.
- Offline method: Head to the Writheblood Ruins in Altus Plateau (directly west of the minor Erdtree in the Altus Plateau). Activate Magnus the Beast Claw‘s invasion sign in the ruins and defeat him.
- Online method: Or you can invade other players using the Festering Bloody Finger. You need to invade three players or three times (but winning these invasions is not necessary). Recusant Finger invasions do not count.
- Regardless of which approach you finished, you’ll need to go back to Varre at the Rose Church afterward.
- Varre will reward you with an invitation to join his order. Agree to this, and he’ll give you the Lord of Blood’s Favor item. He’ll ask you to soak it in the blood of a maiden if you want to join Varre’s secret order.
- You then need to search for the corpse of a maiden (not necessarily a Finger Maiden). You can easily find maidens (dead or alive) in the following locations.
- Church of Inhibition, north of Frenzied Flame Village in Liurnia of the Lakes.
- Or murder Irina near the bridge leading into the Weeping Peninsula in Limgrave. Do talk to her first to accept her questline; afterward, you can slay her (she’ll die anyway).
- Chapel of Anticipation which his accessible again via the second of The Foul Belfries (you need a Stonesword Key).
- I recommend the dead maiden in the Church of Inhibition. Just walk up to the aforementioned corpses of the maidens and activate the prompt.
- Return to Varre in Rose Church and he will reward you with the Pureblood Knight’s Medal and a reusable Bloody Finger for invasions. You are now an official member of his cult.
- Use the Pureblood Knight’s Medal in your inventory to teleport yourself to Mohgwyn Palace.
Note that Varre’s questline does not end there. There will be future encounters with him in Mohgwyn Palace.
As soon as you get teleported to Mohgwyn Palace, remember to activate the nearest Site of Grace you can find to make the area more accessible.
Moreover, this area is notoriously difficult, so expect a fair number of deaths from the NPCs.
The starting area in Mohgwyn Palace is also a popular spot for leveling (and over-leveling) if you have a bow.
As I mentioned earlier, this also isn’t the only way to get to Mohgwyn Palace.
How to Get to Mohgwyn Palace Late
Technically, this is the better time and moment to get to Mohgwyn Palace since you’ll likely have at least 40-50 Vigor and upgraded gear at this point. Consequently, you’ll be well-equipped for Mohgwyn Palace’s challenges if you get to it late.
In case you murdered Varre out of frustration (which is understandable), this is the only method for you.
- Progress the main quest up to the Erdtree fight with Morgott and proceed to the Mountaintops of the Giants. Make sure you unlock the Grand Lift of Rold.
- Find both halves of the Haligtree Medallions. They’re in the following locations:
- Albus in the Village of the Albinaurics in Liurnia of the Lake (he’s disguised as a pot).
- On top of Castle Sol (accessible after defeating Commander Niall) in Mountaintops of the Giants.
- Head back to the Grand Lift of Rold and use the Haligtree Medallions instead of the Rold Medallion.
- Progress through the dungeon, its exit leads to the Consecrated Snowfield.
- Head to the western part of the Consecrated Snowfield. You’ll find a teleporter near its western edge. This teleporter leads to Mohgwyn Palace. Activate it and you’ll gain access to the region.
Likewise, look for the first Site of Grace you’ll find and activate it so you can make Mohgwyn Palace more accessible.
You’ll be better prepared for it this time since you likely can’t survive the Consecrated Snowfields with low-level gear.
Elden Ring is available for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.
