If you have been extensively exploring the world of Elden Ring, you may have already come across a large magical barrier in the Lake of Rot region after the terrifying area boss, Astel, Naturalborn of the Void. The barrier will do nothing except tell you that you are unable to proceed without a “Ring of Oath.” This message actually can be a little misleading since there is not an item named “Ring of Oath” but instead needs the Dark Moon Ring, a ring that serves as an oath to Ranni the Witch, to deactivate the magic spell. In this guide, you will learn all you need to know for where to find the Ring of Oath, also known as the Dark Moon Ring, in Elden Ring.

Where To Find The Ring Of Oath In Elden Ring

To secure the Ring of Oath you need, you will have to progress a decent amount into the questline for Ranni the Witch. Besides its use for progress in this particular area, the Ring of Oath is necessary if you plan on finishing Ranni’s quest and/or achieve her ending. If you have not already met the important character at the Church of Elleh during the night and have progressed past Stormveil Castle, you can find her in the northwest end of Liurnia of the Lakes at Ranni’s Rise. Ranni’s Rise will be just west of Carian Manor and be the tower in between Renna’s Rise and Selvius’ Rise. Complete any tasks, reach new areas, and exhaust all dialogue in her quest until you reach the point when you fight a Baleful Shadow in the Lake of Rot region; defeating it will grant you a Discarded Palace Key. The Discarded Palace Key is able to then be used on a locked chest that will appear in the Raya Lucaria Grand Library Site of Grace after defeating the Academy of Raya Lucaria legacy dungeon boss, Rennala of the Full Moon. Open the chest, and you will be granted the key item the Dark Moon Ring, which serves as the Ring of Oath you need.

Return to the barrier past the boss arena of Astel, and if you currently have the Ring of Oath (Dark Moon Ring) in your inventory, the magic should already have been dispelled. Beyond where the barrier is a short walk that brings you to a platform elevator. Activate the elevator, and you will be brought up very high to the Moonlight Altar plateau on the southwest side of Liurnia of the Lakes, an area made previously inaccessible. This part of the world and process is integral to finishing Ranni’s quest, nab the ultra-powerful Dark Moon Greatsword in the process, and brings you one step closer to ascending to the throne of Elden Lord and bringing about a new age of your choosing.
