A surprise live elephant guest for a Texas convention made an impact in a way it probably wasn’t supposed to. The animal relieved itself on the venue floor in front of a massive crowd of delegates, members of the press, and a barrage of cell-phone cameras. The video then took on a life of its own online, where all sorts of different interpretations popped up.
The incident happened at the George R. Brown Convention Center on June 12, 2024, during the 2026 Texas Republican Party Convention, and a short while after Gov. Greg Abbott finished his keynote speech.
Reports say an announcer told the room, which was full of spectators, to clear the aisles for a “larger than life surprise,” after which Abbott unveiled an elephant named Paige adorned in a patriotic headdress and a campaign banner.
The following video clip, obtained from the Texas Tribune’s Alejandro Serrano, shows Paige being led through the venue’s hall between the press and the delegates following Abbott’s speech, while cell phones simultaneously appeared everywhere.
A short time later, Paige abruptly stopped mid-walk and urinated, with surrounding onlookers shouting “Oh no!” as the deed was committed.
The GOP had reportedly advertised Paige’s appearance beforehand, and party accounts dubbed the walk-through a “treat” that guests “won’t ever forget,” and after it happened, this seemed to be especially true with viewers on the internet.
Internet Reacts to Elephant Relieving Itself at Texas GOP Convention
The clip sparked an avalanche of reactions online.
Many users leaned into the symbolism. One widely shared comment read, “If you have a better metaphor for how the GOP treats America, than an actual elephant pissing all over the place, I’d like to see it!” Another framed it more simply: “How symbolic — elephant didn’t want to be there.”
Others focused on the animal’s well-being rather than the politics. One commenter wrote, “That poor elephant. That highly intelligent mammal being used as a prop should be illegal,” while another suggested the elephant could sense the mood of the crowd, claiming it “felt all that negative energy” from those in attendance.
A separate reply leaned into dry humor, noting that elephants are considered highly intelligent and suggesting the animal “was expressing an opinion.”
Given that the elephant has long served as the mascot of the Republican Party, many internet commenters linked Paige’s mishap to the party’s political reputation. Some users used the elephant’s appearance as an opportunity to discuss using animals in politics and entertainment, and whether it’s right to involve them in public events at all.
So far, there have been no public statements made from Gov. Abbott’s office or the Texas GOP about the incident.
