In 2003, we were blessed with one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time, Elf, one of the funniest holiday films yet. Elf was one of Will Ferrell’s biggest roles that year, and definitely one that did not disappoint, as Elf is not a holiday staple in loads of households around the world. As far as Christmas comedies go, Elf is one of the best, mixing loads of hilarious scenes with a heart-warming story of an adopted elf who finally meets his real dad. Keep reading to learn about the 10 funniest scenes from the holiday film, Elf.
10. Bigfoot Buddy
This scene was interesting, as we used our knowledge of other pop culture references to help understand the comedy. Though, indirectly referring to Buddy the Elf as Bigfoot really struck our funny bones, as Buddy is so much larger than the typical elf, towering over the others in size. It only makes sense that Buddy the Elf would be compared to Bigfoot, as he is the Bigfoot of the North Pole. You can see Buddy the Elf in this scene, walking through the woods, taking huge strides as he swings his arms along with his legs in sync, just before the frame freezes, showing Buddy the Elf in the woods like you would see Bigfoot in any typical Bigfoot sighting.
9. Breakfast Buddy
This scene was one of my particular favorites. While Buddy the Elf’s new family sits down for a nice spaghetti dinner, Buddy decides to sweeten his meal a bit. Buddy adds syrups, candy, and marshmallows into his spaghetti rather than eating it like everyone else is, earning himself quite a few interesting looks from his new family. Buddy’s choice of food helps to understand some of the purely chaotic behavior he exhibits, but it’s pretty funny as well.
8. Michael Saves the Day
In this scene, toward the end of Elf, Santa finds himself broken down in the middle of Central Park with a bit of a big issue on his hands. In order to get his sleigh moving again, Santa needs people to start believing in Christmas magic once again like they used to. In order to help Santa, Buddy the Elf’s little brother, Michael, steps up to help out. However, the funniest part of this scene is when Michael steals Santa’s ledger and starts reading what some of the people n the naughty list want for Christmas, beginning with a girl who wants “a Tiffany ring and for her boyfriend to stop dragging his feet and commit already.” I think we all got a pretty decent laugh out of this one.
7. Santa’s Arrival
In this scene, everyone at the mall is talking about how Santa is coming to town, and Buddy the Elf finds it strange that nobody is nearly as excited as they should be about Father Christmas’ arrival. Buddy is under the impression that the real Santa is coming to town and is equally disappointed, as he was excited when he realized that an imposter had come to visit under the guise of Santa.
6. Raccoon Wrestling Buddy
Once Buddy the Elf discovers that his father lives in New York, he sets off right away to find his dad, regardless of the lack of experience he has in the world outside of the North Pole. Though, once Buddy ventures into the land of men, he finds that the world is much less loving and magical than he is used to when he stumbles upon a lonely raccoon with whom he only wants to be friends. The raccoon clearly has other ideas, as it wastes no time in launching itself at Buddy.
5. Angry Elf
When Buddy the Elf’s dad has to pull him into his office with him, Buddy encounters what he believes to be another elf, Miles Finch, a dwarf who is also a best-selling author. Buddy unintentionally upsets him by calling him an elf repeatedly. Buddy continues to irritate Miles throughout the encounter by asking him if Santa knows he left the workshop. Though, Miles has finally had it when Buddy the Elf mumbles under his breath that Miles Finch must be a South Pole elf.
4. New York Buddy
After Buddy the Elf has made it to New York, he ventures around the city and takes in his new and unusual (to him) sights. Buddy does a number of things that make it obvious that he’s not from around there. First, he happily waves at a man who is trying to flag down a taxi, then takes as many flyers as he confined, gets his shoes shined, makes himself dizzy in the revolving doors, and finally heads to get himself one of the world’s best cups of coffee. Not realizing that this was only for marketing purposes, he’s very obviously appalled when he tastes “the world’s best cup of coffee.” This is one of the 10 funniest scenes from the holiday film, Elf.
3. Escalator Buddy
When Buddy the Elf enters the mall for the first time in this holiday film, we get to see one of the funniest scenes as he discovers an escalator for the first time. Not sure how to use it correctly, but Buddy messes it all up. Sure it’s a bit nerve wracking when you step on an escalator for the first time, but Buddy took it to the extreme as he put one foot on and let it continue moving without lifting up his other leg. The result is a hilarious scene with Will Ferrell nearly doing the splits on an escalator.
2. Taxi Buddy
As Buddy ventures out into the bustling streets of New York City, he almost immediately gets hit by a taxi. All of the cheerful Christmas music comes to an abrupt halt. At this point, we’re quickly reminded that this is still New York City, not some magic Christmas land, as Buddy stands up and apologizes to the taxi driver.
1. Fake Santa
The absolute best scene in Elf is easily when Buddy the Elf encounters his first Santa imposter. This is largely due to the strong build-up we had from Buddy getting excited over hearing everyone talk about Santa. When he discovers this Santa isn’t the Santa he knows and loves, all hell breaks loose as he causes a huge scene, upsetting children who are only trying to tell Santa what they want for Christmas.
