Embracer Group has admitted that the Alone in the Dark reboot failed in terms of sales after being released in March of this year. The announcement comes from the earnings report of Embracer group that came out today, on May 23. In the statement, the company said that the reboot was expected to have more interest in the market, but the reception turned out to be “softer” than initially expected.

Even though fans enjoyed the game, and most classified it as a positive experience, Alone in the Dark sales weren’t enough to be considered a commercial success. Put simply, fans loved it, but there just enough of them. The lack of sales may or may not be related to the layoffs that Pieces Interactive, the developers of the reboot, had to go through just one month after the launch of the game. But Embracer Group did not confirm if that was the reason or not, so this is just speculation at this point.

In our review, TheNerdStash called it “a worthy retread” and gave it a 7.5/10. While the game is a must-play for fans of the franchise, it had its shortcomings for everyone else. Even though it came with an interesting and well-acted narrative, the combat fell well short of its contemporaries, and some animations also left a lot to be desired.

Embracer Group has been through mass layoffs like every other major company in the industry, and that resulted in fans wanting their favorite developers to leave. That is exactly what happened with Knights of the Old Republic Remake developers, Saber Interactive, who left Embracer Group in a $500 Million deal. The developers confirmed that the KOTOR Remake is being worked on just like before, and the team is passionate about what they’re making.
