As the saying goes, family comes first, unless someone’s a criminal. While one Texas woman isn’t harboring a wanted convict or anything of the sort, she did reveal some pretty concerning news after her husband passed away. “Her son would be moving in with her soon because he’s getting out of prison,” a neighbor explained in her post on r/AITAH. As anyone would, curiosity got the best of her, so she and her husband looked up who the son was, and they were shocked with their discovery: “He’s a registered offender with multiple violations involving minor children.”
It goes without saying that the couple felt sick to their stomach. They were parents themselves, and their neighborhood is full of school children who frequent the nearby streets and parks. The couple tried getting more out of the registered offenders mother, who replied in a very dismissive and entitled way. “Her response was that her son was ‘framed’ and that she shouldn’t have to tell anyone because she ‘lived in this neighborhood first and has lived here for years,’” the neighbor stressfully recalled.
Clearly, this older mother doesn’t seem like she takes her adult son’s charges very seriously. OP explains how the son was first found in possession of illegal media of minors, and then was later caught by undercover police posing as parents “selling” their 10-year-old child to him. Needless to say, the thought of this person living in a family-centric neighborhood with lots of kids sounds terrifying. Yet, the neighbor also feels torn since the mom just lost her husband, so this son is the only family she probably has left.
Many Found It Extremely Worrisome the Mother Doesn’t Care About Her Son’s Crimes
The comment section, however, reassured OP that the worry and uncomfortable disgust they felt to not want the son to move in is completely valid. One top commenter even recommends informing the local school about the registered offender’s arrival. While it’s possible the mom’s in denial, many Reddit users found it beyond messed up that she’s not taking her son’s past crimes seriously. “It’s really concerning that she’s adamant he was framed. Either she won’t take steps to protect the local kids, or he lied to her about it and hasn’t learned a thing,” remarks a commenter.
“She’s just burying her head in the sand in choosing her son above the children’s safety. That’s so toxic,” added another. “She can still love and care for him but she shouldn’t ignore the reality.” In the end, legally speaking, there’s nothing the neighbor can do to stop the son from coming besides convincing the mother that it’s not the best idea, according to Reddit. That said, the neighbors can still do their best to inform others in the neighborhood of the situation, as it is only right to prioritize the children’s safety.
