The video game industry is putting more and more investments into Star Wars. We have seen plenty of releases in recent years, but based on the calendar, it looks like it will ramp up even further in the coming years. Epic open-world games to smaller-scale titles are in development to satisfy all kinds of tastes. This year, we got Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, but that is not the only title that was in the works. If you want to wield more lightsabers and blasters to take down the Empire, you will have plenty of choices in the future. Let’s go over every Star Wars game in production and what details are known about each project.
Star Wars: Hunters
- Platform(s): Nintendo Switch, Android, iOS
- Release Date: TBA 2023
Zynga and NaturalMotion will dip Star Wars into the mobile free-to-play model with Star Wars: Hunters. It will be a team-based competitive multiplayer game with original characters in the galaxy far, far away, featuring familiar groups, like Stormtroopers. The original characters will have full backstories and banter with other characters to bring them to life. Arenas will feature “iconic” locations across Star Wars media that fans will recognize.
As you jump in, you can choose between three classes: the classic archetypes of support, damage, and tank. Whatever your playstyle is, you can utilize it in three game modes: Huttball, Control, and Escort. Huttball will be a combat-based sport of trying to take a ball to score goals. Control is a classic mode for PvP games as you try to increase your team’s score. Escort will put you on a defensive or offensive side to either stop or push a payload to a specific location.
Star Wars Outlaws
- Platform(s): PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC
- Release Date: 2024
Out of every Star Wars game in production, Ubisoft’s Outlaws is one of the most anticipated. It will take Massive Entertainment to a new level as the studio prepares to release its Avatar game, Frontiers of Pandora. We will be taken into the universe’s underworld as a new protagonist, Kay Vess. The scoundrel will go on galactic heists and become a major headache for the Empire.
Ubisoft is known for its open-world games. From the gameplay we have seen so far, it doesn’t look to fit in the same mold we have seen from Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry. Players will go to various planets for missions and other activities. Just from a bite-size look, we see the versatile way Kay can move to avoid enemies and fight back when needed to quickly get around these massive planets. But it is not all about being on the ground as you get to fly around space for some dogfighting action.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lL-RfE-ioJ8
- Platform(s): PS5 and PC
- Release Date: TBC
One of the greatest classic Star Wars RPGs was Knights of the Old Republic. In an era of gaming wherein we see remakes that take classics into the present, this beloved gem will get a similar treatment. Based on recent remakes like Dead Space, early Resident Evil entries, and Demon’s Souls, the bar has been set high for how beautiful it should look and how its gameplay will be modernized. The original game let you customize how you went through the story with dramatic choices to lean toward the dark or light side. Between these choices and its turn-based combat, it will be interesting when we see gameplay of what stays faithful and what gets a facelift.
Not much is known about the KOTOR remake. Out of every Star Wars game in production, this one has had its troubles. As reported by Bloomberg, it has been “delayed indefinitely.” It was also reported that development would go from Aspyr to Saber Interactive during a company shakeup.
Star Wars: Eclipse
- Platform(s): TBC
- Release Date: TBC
Heavy Rain and Detroit: Become Human developer Quantic Dream will take its story-driven style into Star Wars with Eclipse. The developer’s games follow a similar formula of telling intertwined stories of various characters who may seem unlikely to cross paths until your choices lead their respective stories to unite. That level of interactivity and the butterfly effect based on your choices in this setting will make for a unique and dynamic experience.
Eclipse will take place in the High Republic Era in “an uncharted region of the Outer Rim.” Quantic Dream’s style will lend well to giving us new characters to control and direction of the story. Due to being in early development when it was announced in 2021, we don’t know much about the new characters we will meet or the new locations we will visit. We can surely expect a current-gen narrative experience that will see many branches form based on how you play.
Respawn’s Untitled Star Wars FPS
- Platform(s): TBC
- Release Date: TBC
Of every Star Wars game developed in recent years, DICE delivered a AAA FPS experience with both Battlefront games. Respawn had its roots in the genre with Titanfall and Apex Legends but has pivoted away with Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor. Its untitled Star Wars FPS game, currently in production, will bring the company back to its shooter roots in a way that has us excited about what this could look like.
The game will be helmed by Peter Hirschmann. He has plenty of FPS experience with the original Battlefront games and Medal of Honor. Between the studio’s history with the genre and Hirschmann’s previous work, it looks to be in good hands when we eventually see what this game will be. It is unconfirmed if it will be a solo story-driven adventure or a competitive online experience. Development was announced last year, so don’t hold your breath until we get more information on this upcoming game.
Respawn and Bit Reactor’s Untitled Star Wars Strategy Game
- Platform(s): TBC
- Release Date: TBC
The EA umbrella continues to hold the Star Wars IP with a strong grip. Respawn will develop a Star Wars strategy game with assistance from a new studio, Bit Reactor, which was formed by devs behind XCOM and Civilization. Firaxis veteran Greg Foertsch will lead development on this project over at Bit Reactor, lending his experience with Civilization to deliver a proper strategy experience. Like the untitled FPS, this project is in good hands with veterans of the strategy genre. As it is in early development, not much is known about this game. It is unclear how far development has come in comparison to the untitled shooter. Thankfully, Jedi: Survivor and other games will keep us busy in this universe while we wait for these other games.
XCOM and Civilization are popular games in the strategy genre that are not too complicated for newcomers. While the two are different, it is unclear if we will set up civilizations in the Star Wars universe or have a more action-packed experience that is comparable to XCOM. After Midnight Suns, people who worked at Firaxis have proven they can twist their formula into something new. By having these Firaxis veterans, plenty of options are on the table for how the game will be approached.
Amy Hennig’s Untitled Star Wars Game
- Platform(s): TBC
- Release Date: TBC
Skydance New Media, Amy Hennig’s new studio, is going for the biggest IPs in the world. On top of making a Marvel game, the studio will be taking on a Star Wars project in the form of a story-driven game. As Hennig was supposed to have a game back at Visceral Games which was reworked and canceled, this is her new chance to dive back into the galaxy.
Hennig is the industry veteran behind Uncharted and Jak and Daxter. Due to the axed Visceral project, she is having a renaissance between this untitled Star Wars game and her Black Panther/Captain America game set in World War 2. As her Marvel game has had a teaser and some details, her Star Wars project seems further away, so we will have to be patient as we await details. Similar to the Marvel game, we can expect a captivating story in an action-adventure experience.
