The second season of Amazon Prime Video’s high fantasy series The Wheel of Time is right around the corner. Coming off a successful debut run, this new season will continue to adapt Robert Jordan’s popular novels for the popular streaming service. Amazon has a lot of faith in the series – so much so that the show was renewed for a second season before the first had even debuted. Of course, the first season was one of the most-watched series on Prime. Now, after an almost two-year wait, Prime Video is bringing us all back to the World of the Wheel on September 1. So, let’s look at everything we know heading into this new adventure!

Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time’s first season concluded on December 24, way back in 2021. It follows Moiraine, a formidable woman who can channel a unique power, as she sets out on a quest. She seeks out a group of five young villagers knowing that one of them is the reincarnation of an extremely powerful magic channeler known as the Dragon. This Dragon Reborn is prophesized to either save the world or destroy it.
With the five in tow, Moiraine and crew set out on a world-spanning trek to uncover the truth of the Dragon. Eventually, it is revealed that the villager Rand is the Dragon Reborn. Together, he and Moiraine sneak off to find the Eye of the World and face the Dark One alone.
Meanwhile, the other villagers stand together to fight the Dark One’s forces. Rand overcomes the Dark One with Moiraine’s help. However, he asks that Moiraine, who lost her powers, find the others and tell them he died as he sets off on a journey alone.
Who Is Returning to The Wheel of Time
Almost all the original cast from season one is back for season two. This includes Rosamund Pike (Moiraine Damodred), Daniel Henney (Lan Mandragoran), Josha Stradowski (Rand al’Thor), and Marcus Rutherford (Perrin Aybara). Also returning are Madeleine Madden (Egwene al’Vere) and Zoe Robins (Nynaeve al’Meara). The only big shakeup is the actor portraying Mat Cauthon. In season one he was portrayed by actor Barney Harris. However, Harris has left the show and Mat Cauthon will now be portrayed by Donal Finn.
Along with all the returning cast, the Prime Video series also features several new cast members and characters. Ceara Coveney is on board as the powerful channeler Elayne Trakand. Meanwhile, Ayoola Smart is playing the Maiden of the Spear, Aviendha. Also joining the second season are Meera Syal and Natasha O’Keeffe. O’Keeffe is playing a powerful magic user known as Lanfear while Syal is portraying Verin Mathwin and Aes Sedai on a quest for knowledge.
Rounding out the newcomers are Xelia Mendes-Jones, Maja Simonsen, Ragga Ragnars, Jay Duffy, and Rima Te Wiata. We also know that the character of Loial, who seemed to die at the end of season one, will be back in season two.
What To Expect From This New Season
While not much of the plot is known for The Wheel of Time season two, we do have a general idea. Many of the events that occur will come from the second and third novels in Robert Jordan’s series. However, they will not be a word-for-word recreation, but instead weave the plot together to tell a new tale for television.
Showrunner Rafe Judkins has shared some snippets of what to expect in this new season. He shared that one of the season’s overarching themes will be that of loneliness. Plus, this new season will dive deeper into each character with individual storylines. The first season focused more on the characters as a group. Judkins also hinted that we will see more about the history of the first Dragon and more on the love triangle taking shape between Moiraine, Lan, and Nynaeve.
As with many popular shows, like Amazon’s The Rings of Power, the scale for season two is much larger than the first. So, expect bigger action, grander settings, and even more drama.
The Wheel of Time season two premieres Friday, September 1 on Prime Video.
