The newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to come to theaters, as The Marvels is set to release on November 10, 2023. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the film is acting as the sequel to the 2019 movie Captain Marvel. Brie Larson will be returning as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, and is joined by Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, as well as Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, a.k.a Ms. Marvel. Because it’s not just Danvers’ story that will be continuing, you might want to catch up on the MCU. So, let’s go through everything you should watch before The Marvels.
Every MCU Project You Should Watch Before The Marvels
As we mentioned previously, The Marvels isn’t just an outing for Danvers. There are four characters whose stories you will need to be up to date with when you watch the movie, even if some stories aren’t referenced throughout. So, the main four things you need to watch before The Marvels are, in order, Captain Marvel, WandaVision, Ms. Marvel, and Secret Invasion. You can also throw in Avengers: Endgame between Captain Marvel and WandaVision if you want to see more of Captain Marvel’s story.
Endgame might also come in handy if the film references the Blip, as most of the post-Endgame projects have been. Captain Marvel will be beneficial in learning Captain Marvel’s origin, and it sets up the Kree. The Kree should be a major part of The Marvels, considering the main antagonist is a Kree warrior named Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton). WandaVision introduces the older Monica Rambeau and establishes her attitude toward Captain Marvel and her mother, Maria Rambeau. Ms. Marvel introduces Kamala Khan, and the post-credits scene ties right into The Marvels, so you’ll need to watch it as well.
Secret Invasion is the least likely to be referenced out of the four, both because of its negative reception and because it followed Fury’s story, who might not have much screen time compared to the others. You could also check out Guardians of the Galaxy for the Kree villain Ronan the Accuser, but it shouldn’t be necessary. Captain Marvel and the three Disney Plus shows should be all you need. Of course, there might be references to other MCU projects, but we won’t know more until The Marvels lands in theaters on November 10, 2023.
