You usually wouldn’t expect to be stuck in a main quest in an RPG, but Fallout 4 is different. The quest, Road to Freedom will task you with finding a freedom fighter group responsible for the salvation of the Commonwealth. However, finding them is the problem, and that’s where a lot of players get stuck. A proper quest guide, particularly for the Freedom Trail Code in Fallout 4 ought to help you get unstuck in the Road to Freedom quest.

Once you’ve acquired the quest (through multiple in-game triggers) head over to Boston Common and talk to the Tour Bot. This will mark the beginning of your goose chase with The Railroad.

If you find the Tour Bot’s instructions a bit confusing, all you have to do is follow the red trail of bricks on the ground in Boston Common. After a certain point, the red brick trail will replaced by red paint. Just follow any red trail at that point.

Think of this as some kind of field trip as the whole trail will take you to the Boston landmarks. However, each of these landmarks is a clue to a code that you need to remember.

While following the red trail, you need to take note of the letter and number combinations of each of the landmarks if it’s your first time playing. If you’re stuck, however, I’m going to make it simpler for you, here’s the full code along with their locations:

  • 7A – near the Tour Bot in Boston Common
  • 4L – Massachusetts State House
  • 2A – Old Granary burying ground
  • 6O – near the Goodneighbor entrance
  • 3I – Old Corner Bookstore
  • 5R – Faneuil Hall
  • 8D – Paul Revere House
  • 1R – Old North Church

The Freedom Trail Code is thus 1R 2A 3I 4L 5R 6O 7A 8D in that order. If you remove the numbers after arranging them numerically, you’ll come up with RAILROAD, which is the actual Freedom Trail Code and password for The Railroad’s secret base. Who’d have thought?

Since the code and the trail end in the Old North Church, you can actually just head there. There’s no need to follow through the red trail and collect all the parts of the code.

Going straight to the Old North Church will advance the stage of the quest. All you have to do is:

  1. Head straight to the Old North Church.
  2. Clear all the ghouls.
  3. Follow the lantern painting until you get to the catacombs.
  4. Look for the Freedom Trail marker with a ring in the catacombs.
  5. Spell the password, RAILROAD one at a time to open the door.
  6. If you make a mistake, repeat the RAILROAD spelling.

Afterward, The Railroad will greet you politely, with guns.
