Following Conor McGregor‘s recent sexual assault trial, several brands and businesses have started dropping the former MMA Champion’s images and likeness. One of those is the National Wax Museum Plus in Dublin, Ireland. The museum’s authorities saw it fit to remove Conor McGregor’s wax figure after it became one of their most popular displays for the wrong reason.
The museum relayed its stance in a statement recently:
“As a family-friendly attraction, we regularly review our exhibits to ensure they align with our values and the expectations of our visitors. We will continue to monitor the situation and make decisions about future displays accordingly.
If you look at most photos online taken by people visiting the museum, a lot would be with McGregor,” according to their spokesperson.
The Conor McGregor wax figure first went on display back in 2017 and it has sparked an increased social media presence, especially from tourists.
As for why, Conor McGregor’s trial happened back on November 22, 2024, against a woman named Nikita Hand. Nikita Hand claimed that Conor McGregor sexually assaulted her while she was intoxicated in a hotel in Dublin back in December 2018.
Still, McGregor maintains that everything that happened on that night was consensual. Meanwhile, the authorities in Ireland decided not to pursue a criminal case against McGregor. But even then, Conor McGregor lost the civil case and the Dublin High Court mandated him to pay €250,000 ($264,000) in damages to Nikita Hand.
Despite the large sum and fine, crowds gathered in Dublin to protest the Irish DPP’s (director of public prosecution) light punishment for Conor McGregor. McGregor then plans to appeal the decision made by the High Court.
Brands Don’t Want Anything to Do With McGregor Now
Other companies have already made their initiatives to steer clear of Conor McGregor’s branding. Everything from video game deals to popular liquor has been shedding off anything related to McGregor. Even Irish gyms have started removing Conor McGregor’s mural after he lost the civil case.
McGregor, who has unfortunately been featured in a popular AAA video game, such as the Hitman series, is now erased from the title, similar to the wax museum incident. Danish game studio IO Interactive has recently made the decision to cut ties with Conor McGregor despite the deal. They’ll also be removing all content in their storefronts that feature Conor McGregor.
Oddly enough, Conor McGregor appeared in Hitman as an elusive assassination target and IO Interactive even sold permanent access to Conor McGregor through a $5 DLC. IO Interactive hasn’t made it clear whether they’ll also remove the content for players who paid for McGregor.
