The film will be based on Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me. Jon M. Chu is reportedly “attached to direct,” while Liz Meriwether is expected to write the script. At this point, Sweeney is reportedly the leading contender, although other actresses are also being considered. Millie Bobby Brown, Addison Rae, Bailee Madison, and Kylie Schultz are reportedly among the other options.
“Sydney has become one of the names generating the strongest interest. There is no final decision, but she has the profile, range and familiarity with Britney’s image that make her an obvious person for the filmmakers to consider. Millie has also been very open about how much the role would mean to her, while Addison, Bailee and Kylie remain part of the wider conversation,” a source told the outlet.
If Sweeney is ultimately chosen to portray Spears, it would not be her first time playing a real-life figure in a biopic. The actress previously portrayed professional boxer Christy Martin in the 2025 biographical sports drama Christy. It explored the athlete’s rise in boxing and her personal struggles.
She also played Reality Winner in the 2023 film Reality, which was based on the real-life NSA contractor’s interrogation. A role as Spears would give Sweeney another opportunity to portray a well-known woman whose life has attracted significant public interest.
The rumored casting has also received negative reactions from some fans online. Critics pointed to the existing dislike toward Sweeney as one reason they do not want to see her portray Spears. The reports come shortly after Sweeney faced criticism over a September 2026 advertising campaign for sports prediction platform Novig. She appeared in the ad in minimal clothing while posing with various sports equipment.
