Recently, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made an announcement on what he demands the US military to look like and how to act. One of the biggest things he’s said is that the military is too “woke” for trying to promote diversity. This disgusting and even dystopian outlook is worrisome to many people. This is especially true for those who are currently serving or have served in the military. A Georgia army veteran is now speaking up about her personal experience in the military as a woman. She does this as a way to show why Pete’s words are troubled and wrong.
Maura (@maurakellerforgeorgia) shared a video following Pete Hegseth’s newest military orders. Military veterans across the U.S. are not happy with what they’ve heard. Hegseth was quoted as saying that he doesn’t want “fat troops” and that males will only be able to meet the standard for certain positions. He said that, if women aren’t able to fill those roles, then “it is what it is.” If you disagree with him, then apparently that’s being “woke” and you have no place in the military in his eyes. So, people like Maura are speaking up and sharing their personal experiences. They’re doing this as a way to speak out about this egregious behavior that Pete is displaying and his total dishonor to the military.
Maura claims, “Pete will destroy our military.” She is a 26-year-old Army veteran who enlisted as a military policewoman and knows what it was like being a woman in the military in the late 70s. She said it makes her angry that Pete keeps saying the “standards have been lowered” in our military. In 1979, she was told by the military what she could and couldn’t do. She said women weren’t allowed to work together. She spoke out against that and, even though she received pushback, eventually they caved and allowed women to work together. Their reasoning was that they “didn’t think women could handle it.” They didn’t have a lot of respect for women in many ways.
Maura said that the women around her in the military worked diligently to earn their place. This was during a time when women were not treated with the respect they deserve and she also said that it was difficult for both women and people of color to receive recognition in the military. When they were awarded, the military would say that they were taking recognition away from white men. Now, we deal with people like Pete Hegseth and his backwards ideals on women,
people of different races, and people who are overweight. Why are people like this in charge? As Maura says, Pete’s “male toxicity” is going to destroy things for the military as it stands.
One commenter responded to Maura’s post, “That meeting set the military back decades and made it more unsafe than ever before.” Another pointed out, “Will destroy? Has destroyed. He’s not looking in the mirror! Thankfully the military in place are above the bull and are professional and took an oath to constitution not a dictator. Thank you for your service.” This administration is trying to dictate everything from the inside. It may not like the results it receives.
