This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

Saying FFXIV has lore-filled quests in every corner would be an understatement, and the ‘Remembering the Past’ mission is a clear example. For those who don’t know, the current version of the MMO is its second attempt at making a multiplayer game. The infamous 1.0 patch got a revamp back in the day, and to commemorate the game‘s hiatus, an in-lore event was held that set the events for A Realm Reborn. Since many Warriors of Light might’ve missed the game’s first iteration, this quest serves as a quick recap of everything that transpired years ago.

How To Start the ‘Remembering the Past’ Quest in FFXIV

To begin the ‘Remembering the Past’ quest in FFXIV, you must meet a few requirements. First, reach level 50 on any job and complete ‘The Ultimate Weapon” quest. Once you get that done, you can head to Ul’Dah and speak with Nananji.

Nananji is someone who owes a debt to Louisoix Leveilleur, who, if you didn’t know, was a key figure in 1.0 and the grandfather of Alphinaud and Alisaie. Overall, this quest is extremely easy to finish because you only need to follow quest markers and watch cutscenes; there is no combat in this mission. However, for those avid lore fans, we’ll mention what to expect in the quest’s objectives.

The Immortal Flames

Your first stop is at Highbridge near Camp Drybone. There, you’ll meet an Immortal Flames soldier who was part of the events in 1.0. Here, we learn that thanks to Louisoix, the three companies of Eorzea learned about the Meteor Project, which Garleans wanted to use to destroy the realm. However, before we can learn of anything else, the soldier recommends that we seek another soldier, but this time from Gridania.

Now, in Gridania, you must look for a Serpent Lieutenant. Once you find them, they’ll tell you more about Eorzea’s three companies and how they came together to beat the Garleans. It seems that back in the day, these companies weren’t allies. They waged a cold war of sorts to stay ahead of each other. Thanks to Louisoix and the urgency to stop the upcoming calamity, they formed the Eorzean Alliance. Yes, that is another thing to thank Louisoix for. In a desperate mission, the companies, adventures, and the original Warriors of Light destroyed the lunar transmitter to prevent the moon Dalamud from destroying the realm.

The Maelstrom

Finally, we take a trip to Limsa Lominsa to finish the ‘Remembering the Past’ quest in FFXIV. Here, we learn that destroying the lunar transmitter wasn’t enough to stop the Meteor Project. Instead, the Warriors of Light had to defeat the enemy army’s commander. After doing so, the events we see in A Realm Reborn‘s opening cutscenes transpired. Bahamut broke free from the red moon, and the 1.0 version of the game shut down. To justify the game’s rebirth, Louisoix sent us all years into the future, when our current adventure began.

Preserving the Future

You might be wondering why we did this lore dump. Well, that’s because, after the previous interactions, the second and final part of this short quest begins. ‘Preserving the Future’ is the follow-up quest you can take to finally learn what happened during the first version of this MMO. We won’t spoil it for you, but we can tell you there are a few rewards worth getting, such as:

  • End of an Era Framer’s Kit
  • The Man, The Myth, The Legend (Achievement)

If you’re a lore enthusiast, these quests are a must. They aren’t difficult to tackle, and they explain the MMO’s first iteration nicely. And with that, you’ve helped Nananji finish the biography of Eorzea’s hero. After a decade, it is nice to see these iconic events in the game, at least through cutscenes. Whether you’re a new Warrior of Light or an old one, we recommend setting time aside for these missions.
