Materia is already powerful by itself, but you can make it stronger by linking one to another. Of course, you must have the proper gear with a linked Materia slot to activate the special effect. Some equipment only contains single Materia slots, but others can have three pairs of linked slots, improving their utility. While you can pair any Materia, here are my recommendations on the best combinations and which character should equip them in FF7 Rebirth.
Table of contents
10. AP Up + New Materia
The best Materia combination for new FF7 Rebirth players is AP Up and any new Materia you found. Each Materia can gain AP when you equip it; as it gains more stars, it will unlock better effects or new skills. Generally, you want to max out your Materia as fast as possible to unleash its full potential, so linking one with AP Up can hasten the process.
All characters can equip this Materia combination. If you don’t want to waste gear slots, you can give AP Up to units that are not part of your active team. They will also gain AP even when they are not on the battlefield.
9. Auto-Cast + Healing
Another great Materia combination in FF7 Rebirth is Auto-Cast and Healing. If you don’t want to watch your team’s HP, you can just slap this pairing to one of your party members. The AI can judge when a unit requires healing and even decide which magic is the best for the situation.
The best characters to equip this Materia combination are:
- Aerith
- Yuffie
- Barret
8. Auto-Cast + Revival
Like the previous entry, Auto-Cast and Revival is another great Materia combination in FF7 Rebirth. While you’re not likely to die during the majority of your battles, some enemy encounters may have your characters dying left and right.
The best example is the boss fight against Tonberry King. This monster loves to cast instant death spells, and equipping this pairing to your party members is a great way to heal your downed unit automatically.
Here is the list of the best characters to equip this Materia combination:
- Aerith
- Cait Sith
- Yuffie
7. Elemental + Any Elemental Magic
If you prefer a more offensive pairing, you can combine Elemental Materia with any elemental Magic. With this Materia combination, you can imbue elemental magic into your basic attack. This will make fights against creatures with elemental weakness a walk in the park.
Note that you must put this Materia into your weapon slot. Equipping this Materia pairing to your armor will halve the damage you will receive based on the linked elemental Materia.
Some characters that may benefit from this Materia combination:
- Cloud
- Tifa
- Red XIII
6. Magnify + Any Elemental Magic
If you are tired of only targeting one enemy, you can pair Magnify with any Elemental magic. This combination can expand the range of linked Materia, but it will reduce their potency. This pairing is great when fighting a group of monsters with the same elemental weakness.
You can equip this Materia combination to these characters:
- Aerith
- Yuffie
- Cait Sith
5. Magic Efficiency + Any Elemental Magic
Another great Materia combination is Magic Efficiency and any elemental magic. If you love casting many spells, you will quickly deplete your MP. Ethers are harder to find and craft than healing potions, and you want to save them for difficult battles.
If you can level up Magic Efficiency Materia to three stars, you can halve the cost of the linked Materia spell. This pairing will allow you to spam a ton of spells at your opponents before you fully exhaust your MP.
Here are the best characters that can equip this Materia combination in FF7 Rebirth:
- Aerith
- Yuffie
- Cait Sith
4. Level Boost + Any Support Magic
I generally recommend linking AP-Up with your support Materia, but this combination could work when you really need those higher-level spells immediately. For instance, you can only cast Esuna after you level up your Cleansing Materia to two stars.
However, when you reach Gongaga, you must fight those pesky frog monsters that love to turn you into a vulnerable toad. In this situation, it is better to link Level Boost with Cleansing than wait for the Materia to level up.
Here are characters that may equip this Materia combination:
- Aerith
- Barret
- Yuffie
3. Magic Focus + Any Support Magic
As you progress into the end game, you may need to start buffing your team, especially when fighting challenging bosses. Pairing Magic Focus with any support magic can increase the potency and duration of your buffs by up to 25 percent. This could allow you to save some of your MP since you don’t need to cast support magic as often.
Here are my recommendations on the best character to equip this Materia combination:
- Cloud
- Tifa
- Yuffie
2. Magnify + Any Support Magic
Besides Magic Focus, you can also pair your support Materia with Magnify. Instead of hitting more enemies, this Materia combination lets you cast buffs on your whole team. I suggest pairing Magnify with Haste to increase your party’s ATB Gauge rate instantly at the start of a battle.
You can equip this Materia combination to these characters:
- Aerith
- Yuffie
- Red XIII
1. Synergy + Comet
The last entry is my personal favorite. You should try pairing Synergy and Comet if you want to watch the world burn. The Synergy Materia lets your ally follow your party leader’s attack command with an attack from the linked Materia. What’s great about this is that this action does not consume ATB charges or MP.
Casting Comet costs 29 MP, while Cometeor demands 37 MP. That’s a lot of MP, even when you reach the end game. You normally cannot cast this magic often, but you can avoid the MP cost and become mini-Sephiroth if you pair Synergy with Comet.
Aerith is the best FF7 Rebirth character to use this Materia combination, but you can also equip it to other units, such as:
- Cloud
- Cait Sith
- Yuffie
