The shakedown of Hollywood continues, and Jay-Z is the latest celebrity accused of heinous crimes. In a new bombshell lawsuit, the rapper was named alongside his disgraced colleague, Diddy, by an anonymous accuser. She claims they drugged and raped her when she was 13. The plaintiff, who sued as Jane Doe, alleged that the assault happened in 2000 at an after-party for the MTV Video Music Awards.
The civil lawsuit was filed by Texas attorney, Tony Buzbee, who is already repping more than 120 of Diddy’s alleged victims. It was originally filed in October, with the accuser claiming Sean Combs and an unnamed celebrity assaulted her — while an unnamed female watched. The 99 Problems rapper has since denied all allegations, releasing a scathing statement to discredit Buzbee. In the press release shared by his company, ROC Nation, Jay-Z, accused Buzbee of having a “pattern of these types of theatrics.” He further threatened:
“It made me want to expose you for the fraud you are in a VERY public fashion. So no, I will not give you ONE RED PENNY”
The artist also accused Buzbee of a “blackmail attempt,” citing that he often goes after celebrities in the hopes that they will settle. In light of that, here is a look at Buzbee’s track record and scandals.
Tony Buzbee Brought Lawsuits Against Travis Scott & Deshaun Watson
It is no news that Buzbee majorly gained recognition for his lawsuits against Diddy. It was one of his lawsuits that led to the music mogul facing criminal charges. However, before the Texas-born attorney became a Hollywood powerhouse attorny, he was already taking down some big names. In 2022, he announced 24 lawsuits against Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson over sexual misconduct allegations. All but four of the cases has since been settled. A year before that, Buzbee sued Travis Scott, Live Nation and others for $750 million on behalf of more than 120 clients involved in the Astroworld tragedy.
However, before venturing into Hollywood, Buzbee was already making a name for himself. According to his website, he represented over 160 workers injured in the largest industrial accident in U.S. history. He also defended former Gov. Rick Perry against abuse-of-power allegations. Unfortunately, Buzbee’s career hasn’t been without losses. He unsuccessfully represented Los Angeles socialite Rebecca Grossman. She was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of two brothers. However, that didn’t stop the New York Times from describing him as:
“Mr Buzbee is a big, mean, ambitious, tenacious, fire-breathing Texas trial lawyer. Really big. Poster boy big.”
He Is A Democrat Who Once Donated To Donald Trump’s Campaign
The Atlanta, Texas native is Democrat who has unsuccessfully run for public office a couple of times. In 2002, he lost the race for the 24th District of the Texas State House to Republican LarryTaylor. Afterwards, he served as chairman of the Galveston County Democratic Party for two years. However, in 2012, the tide changed for Buzbee when he publicly supported Republican governor of Texas Rick Perry, and contributed over $70,000 to his election campaign. During Perry’s first year of office, he appointed Buzbee to the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents. This resulted in backlash but the famous attorney defended the appointment, saying:
“The governor knows what I do for a living. I think we all moderate as we get older. I’ve kind of become apolitical, to be honest.”
However, Buzbee’s moderate politics became more right-wing when he publicly championed Donald Trump during the 2016 elections. Despite publicly vowing to cut ties with Trump, Buzbee still donated $500,000 to Trump’s inauguration committee, per reports.
Tony Buzbee — A Lawyer With A DWI Charge & An Assault Lawsuit
Although Buzbee’s professional career has been without scandal mostly, the same cannot be said of his personal life. In March 2016, the famed attorney was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor. Surprisingly, the case was dismissed later that year by the Harris County District Attorney. Unfortunately, this resulted in backlash, with the new administration trying to reopen the case due to conflict of interest. Buzbee previously made financial contributions to the District Attorney’s 2014 election campaign, Houston Chronicles report. Luckily, he fought the motion to revisit the expunged case.
Then, in November 2024, Buzbee was sued by a former client. The woman, who filed as Jane Doe, claimed the attorney assaulted her while repping her in a divorce case. A source told TMZ that the incident went down in public when Buzbee saw her and flew into a “fit of rage.” He then allegedly pushed a champagne flute into the plaintiff’s face, chipping her tooth. She claims there are both medical and dental records to prove her injuries. However, Buzbee has since denied the claims, calling the lawsuit “crazy fiction.”
