Today, we get to see the first footage of the new Joker movie via the teaser trailer below. The Clown Prince of Gotham is revealed and showcases some interesting takes on the character. Todd Phillips (The Hangover, Due Date) is now taking the reins on this version of the character with Phoenix taking center stage.
In this version of the DC villain’s own movie, he starts out as Arthur Fleck. He is a struggling comedian who works full time to help pay for a home for him and his mother. We see his world spiral downwards into utter madness with Fleck becoming part of it himself. Joaquin Phoenix is played alongside by Zazie Beetz, Robert De Niro, Marc Maron, and Frances Conroy. Arthur Fleck is a character who is trying to find who he really is in the world, as stated by this line from the trailer,
“I used to think that my life was a tragedy. But now I realize its a comedy.”
The last bit of the trailer shows the transformation of the character. From that of Arthur Fleck now to the Joker. Fleck down on hard times, sees the world getting worse off and crazier in the streets of Gotham. This leads him to say,
“Is it just me, or is it getting crazier out there?”
This is not to be connected with the current DC universe of the Justice League. Warner Bros. began to work on this film as part of a subcategory of DC films along with their future films of Suicide Squad and the horror spinoff from Aquaman. This will be their take on presenting a character in their own limelight without a corresponding hero. Sony has taken this approach over the last year with Venom and despite mixed reviews, the film was a hit at the box-office. DC Comics is hoping to have some of that same success with Joker.
This trailer wasn’t the only Joker related news this week. Cameron Monaghan was seen earlier this week in his full Joker reveal for the series finale of Gotham.
Joker will hit theaters on October 4th, 2019.
