Like many tragic medical stories, it began with a mysterious bump. Fitness superstar and celebrity Richard Simmons, best known for his popular Sweatin’ To The Oldies series, sought medical attention regarding a lump underneath his right eye. According to Simmons, the doctor returned with an announcement that no one wants to hear: it’s cancer. The poster child for living an active lifestyle and encouraging others to do the same, Simmons’s diagnosis comes as a shock to many. The 75-year-old celebrity made a habit of sharing stories of the adversity he’s faced throughout his life, and this time seems no different. Here’s what we know so far about his health and diagnosis.
Richard Simmons Health Diagnosis
Richard Simmons’s diagnosis is basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer. Although basal cell carcinoma has much lower rates of fatality than many cancers, it’s still a scary diagnosis. Like other forms of skin cancer, basal cell is commonly caused by prolonged exposure to the sun. There are other risk factors, however, including aging and family history. Things like avoiding excessive sun exposure and wearing sunscreen can help, according to the Mayo Clinic. It’s unclear what precautions Simmons took throughout his life or how his unique medical history may have contributed. What’s most important now is that he receives the treatment he needs.
The diagnosis doesn’t appear to have robbed Simmons of his sense of humor or tenacity, however. Simmons’s Facebook post went on to say that he has already sought treatment at a specialist, although the first attempt to remove the cancer cells was unsuccessful. This prompted a second visit. All of this comes on the heels of a social media message from Simmons announcing that he was dying, although he later apologized for the statement and said it had been meant to inspire others, not worry them. Considering how many Richard Simmons has inspired throughout his life, this next battle will likely do just that.
