Florida Backpedal as Martha Stewart Blames Her Homeless Costume on a Chocolate Spill Days After Apologizing: ‘It’s Hard to Admit When You’ve Really Screwed Up’

Awareness, apology, accident: one costume, three explanations.

She dressed as a homeless woman, promoted her candles in the caption, apologized when the internet erupted, and then told a sales rally the whole thing started with a chocolate spill.

The Florida reversal came Tuesday at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando, per TMZ, where Martha Stewart, 85, offered a brand-new origin story for the Halloween costume she had already apologized for once.

The costume itself was the first problem. Stewart posted an Instagram photo of herself in distressed jeans and dirt-like makeup, holding a cardboard sign reading “I am hungry, help me!!” The caption promoted her candle collection. Critics called it tone-deaf almost immediately; a hunger sign beside a product plug did most of their arguing for them.

Her first defense, given to Page Six, framed the look as advocacy. The costume, she said, was “intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.” Then the post disappeared.

Next came a full apology on Instagram, one that explicitly retired the awareness defense. “It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up,” she wrote. “My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are economically struggling. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry.“

That looked like the end of it. Then came Orlando.

By TMZ’s account, Stewart told the rally crowd the costume traced back to the Today show, where a chocolate spill ruined the outfit she had planned for a costume party that night. Left with roughly 10 minutes to improvise, she said, she went as a “bum,” her word, and she insisted the look was never meant as an insult.

The problem is arithmetic. A costume cannot be both a planned awareness statement and a 10-minute emergency improvisation, and TMZ said as much, noting the rally story conflicts with what she told Page Six. The outlet reached out to Stewart again and had not heard back by publication.

It is a strange spot for the woman who spent five decades as America’s arbiter of taste. Her empire was built on getting the details right. This time, the details kept changing.

Three Explanations, One Costume

Awareness. Apology. Accident. Each version undercut the one before it, and X noticed within the hour. The sharpest reply needed seven words: “First it was awareness. Now it’s ganache.” Another called it what it had become: “When the story starts changing and the blame starts moving, you know the Halloween costume has become a whole investigation.” The practical corner offered free crisis advice: “Just say you’re f**king sorry and it was stupid and then no one cares. She made this a bigger story.” Her defenders were fewer but present: “She is just explaining the scenario how the bad decision was made.“

She said it best herself: it is hard to admit when you have really screwed up. Apparently, it is harder to admit it only once.
